|
|
Hi all. I tried searching through the forum but after getting side tracked on this cool thread and that cool thread for an hour I gave up and decided to post the question...
I'm looking to buy an out of state (I'm in CA) diesel Westy. I called the DMV and they said I need a 49 or 50 state legal sticker to register it here. I would like to ask prospective sellers for a pic of this picture but I have no idea where it might be. Any help? Anybody have a pic so I can validate that what I receive is the real deal?
Thanks!!!

Hey Jack, I believe the information would be in one of two places. Either in the drivers door jam, or the engine compartment firewalls. I have never registered a vehicle in CA, but maybe you need to ask again. The VIN number should give the DMV all the info they need. It is either a Federal or CA van. Plus I don't think there was a CA Westy Diesel. They were all 50 state legal at the time of production I believe. _________________ ☮️ |

Thanks for the reply. The lady I spoke to (works for CARB and worked for the DMV) said there was a sticker. You would think a VIN number would be better than a sticker of some sort but no good comes of applying logic to government thinking .
If you happen to hop in your bus anytime soon could you have a look at the door jam and see if there is anything there of use? I just watched a video of a LR Defender getting crushed by the feds because it was an illegal import, I think I might cry in front of my family/friends if my new Westy met a similar fate... |

As RSXR said it is in the driver's side door jam just under eye level. It is a about 6" long silver sticker saying that it conforms to all federal blah blah blah.
If it is Canadian it is in the same location but black and has the maple leaf on it. |

Back from the dead! I've resumed my Westy search and have found a clean air cooled (which I worry about how much work it will be to convert to a engine with more horse power than my lawn mower/plumbing a heater).
Anyway, here are the pics I got from the owner, I don't see that they say it is a 50 state car. Can you guys tell if this will give me problems bringing to California? Thanks in advance!

That's the Federal sticker or 49 state version. The CA sticker explicitly says CA or CARB regulations are met.
The CA DMV site says you can't register this car in CA except in some rare personal circumstances. _________________ .ssS! |

Yes ... what was said ^^^
Stickers indicate meets fed law for safety and smog ... same as 49/50 rule.
Feds law trumps state law but state law can exceed (go one step better) than fed law.
Also, states have their own laws where the feds don't trod. Like Cali has tight laws about engine convers whereas Ore has virtually none.
Some states limit or ban window stickers. Some limit the number of operational exterior lighting systems. Etc, etc.
Whatever you bring into Cali -- check on all this. If it's bone stock then the stickers you show should be fine and all you need. If it's been worked on with upgrades and alterations and etc. then check first. |

There should be a sticker on the license plate door that should look like this
I don't think diesels need to be in compliance as they were exempt at the time.. and I think they still are
But, don't hold my hand to the fire on this. _________________ Güdrun -1989 Westfalia - 2013 - 2018
