|
|
So I hooked up my new headlight switch last nite and guess what, I have parking and tail lights but still no head lights. All the fuses are ok and are not corroded in the fuse box. I followed the wiring diagram found on this website. The old switch had fallen apart inside.Any ideas? Thanks. |

If you didn't jumper the X, the headlights are only on when the car is on...
May sound dumb, but was the car running when you tested the headlights?

I would double check that the switch terminal #"s have the correct wires going to them. #58-to park /tail fuses. #56 to headlight relay. #58b to speedo illumination. there are 3-#30's one to main feed from battery, one to ignition switch, one to fuse block. Hope you figure it out I had the same symptom with a new switch and when I tried to adjust speedo illumination (by twisting headlight switch knob) I fried that wire (speedo illumination wire). I believe I had some wires hooked up wrong. I am now temporarily using my old switch no problems. |

How is your ignition switch?
The key return spring in mine doesn't work, so you have to manually return the spring after starting the car.
A couple times, I thought the headlights had stopped working but eventually figured out that the key was turned a little too far back or something. So the ignition connection was made, but not the one that allowed accessories to work.
Jiggling the key a little brought them back to life. _________________ Dave Cook

Thanks for all the advise. By the way what is the best way to test the relay? |

Use a volt meter. Start by turning headlight sw on and see if you have 12v at terminal 56. This is power wire to relay. If you don't light sw is not working.
Next follow white or white/ black stripe wire to terminal 56 on relay. Check for 12v there. If not wire could be bad or corroded. If you have 12v check terminal 56b/F yellow wire, low beam for 12v. Than click dimmer sw to high beam and check terminal 56a, white wire, high beam for 12v. If both have 12v. relay is good. |

Hey. Did you check the relay the way I suggested? If relay checks out it could be a bad hi beam/ low beam switch or maybe your bulbs are burned out! |

Problem solved. I had installed Hella h4 conversion headlights back in 99 when I got the thing. Had used them previously on my 73 bug, they were bought in about 82. Still had the original Bosch bulbs in them. The right side low beam was burned out. Replaced that and the #6 fuse and now everything works. |
