...unless I roll down the window, and slam HARD holding onto the sill right above the handle. It's annoying! What needs to be adjusted to fix this? _________________ Ice Blue '67 Squareback |

Look closely at the part on the pillar. It might have moved- you should be able to see the outline of where it originally sat if it did. Loosen the screws and put it back where it belongs. Tighten her down really well. If you have a sudden door latch issue, that's usually what it is.
Other possibility is the door seal has come loose and is squeezing between the door and the body at the front, making the door a beeyotch to close. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

NOPE!!! I just had this problem on the square and Jacin has the same problem on his notch. Its a pain in the ass to fix but can be done. You need to pull off the panel and the actual part on the door that latches to the striker. There is a spring inside that pops off not allowing you to close the door unlsess you hold down the button or if you open it from the inside. I fixed mine but Jacin is waiting to redo his interior. SLAM AWAY. Sometimes it will latch if you slam hard enough.... _________________ Frank

What if anything can be done and probably more basically how do you properly clean and service trhese door units. The door latches in both my doors are stiff and are I'm sure years over-due,but since they still work and they're original I'd rather keep it that way. Any links? Thanks much as I' sure there are many who could benefit from this type of info, especially us newbies |

The door latches are supposed to be pretty hard to turn. For instance, if you try to turn it with your fingers.
One test is to open the door and the turn the latch to the lock position. Now pull the inside door handle like you are opening the door. The latch should pop open with a loud click and no slow movement. If it doesn't, you need to lube it. The later cars ('66 and later?) have a plug in the door you can remove to spray grease in there (top of photo below) I use a can of spray white lithium. Also spray some rust breaker in the joint that turns. (bottom of picture below)
If it's really bad, remove the door panel and spray some cleaner and new grease up into the door towards the latch to clean the assembly. Or even remove the latch entirely and redo it's lubrication.
The latch itself should have zero side to side play. What does this mean? If you push/pull on it perpendicular to the door, there should not be any movement. _________________ How to Post Photos

Thanks for the info, now when I can get my sife out of her car long enough on a decent day I'll have to give it a shot. The only question that I have is the access plug for greasing the mechanism the little black with hole in center above the screws on catch the plug your talking about or will it be readily apparent when I look at her doors,it's a 71 |

So I came to some what of a solution with this problem. In Everett's photo - see the piece that latches on to the door jamb - if I "pull" this up before closing the door, it latches everytime. I say "pull" because it doesn't move perceptibly at all. All I know is, if you don't "pull" it up, the door bounces back open. _________________ Ice Blue '67 Squareback |
