Not to familiar with Things do thought I would ask here.
Friend picked up a '73 and was told it was the original motor.

The engine number is AM01xxxx.
I never have seen a AM serial.
Is this specific for a Thing?
Thanks in advance.

Yes the AM prefix on the engine is for the type 181, I have a 73 thing with the AM stamp and it feels good to know it is still original. Have Fun Wink

A lot of times the original fan housing gets replaced. Original 73 will not have fresh air outlets for a heater.
