Wrecked it!
Starting a thread on it as it is now a forkin project which I didn't need!

very sad.
a friend of mine did something similar, he t-boned a driving city bus in his low mile 57 fire panel... not only was the nose smashed in, it was also wrapped around the a pillar.
so, cheer up, this could have been worse, at least you did not end up in the hospital. _________________ regards

True and not just that, having barely put a tiny scratch on the heavy duty hitch and chrome bumper of the suburban, dude said he was okay and let me go! So I actually felt lucky for not having to cover any of his "non-loss" on top of fixing my shit! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Replaced Autozone deck lid brake light (Top) to stock (Bottom). Much better!
Shaped and tweaked the emblem and installed. Lookin' purdy.
Also, replaced two mismatched short spoons with two long spoons. All matching now. _________________ 69 Sunroof Deluxe - Montana Red/Cloud White (Sold)

Swapped in 36mm ventures into my 42DCNF Berg Specials.
Bumped the idles to 60, the mains to 140
Installed tall 6" air cleaner filter elements
Tuned and sync'd
I also had a friend cut the side plates from my first attempt to make a narrowed ball joint beam. I'll post pics of attempt #2 as it comes along. |

I installed new engine to body seals today. It was a nice glimpse of SWR in the seal channels, everything slid in smooth with a little silicone lube.

Found this in my barn today.
I think I put it there in 2001 after I got back with it from Panama. I've had no time since then.
But now I am getting enthused again.
Restore or drive as is? Its original paint.

Man, that's in good shape. I'd paint the bumpers, polish the paint change the rubber parts that need it, tune it up and drive it. _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Drive it as is. Its' worth more as it sits in original paint then it will ever be if you start restoring it. They are only original once. |

Another vote to get it running, clean it, buff it and wax it. I'm sure the brakes will need to be gone thru. Fuel tank yanked, cleaned. New fuel lines. Bring it out from hibernation.
On those dings and dents on that original paint- Find a good paintless dent remover person. They could pop and massage out those dents and not damage the original paint as well. Post more pictures of this bus too! _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

The nose is its strong suit. I never realized the center crease extended to below the VW sign:
The are pinholes in the front of the rocker panel:
Wheel arches and underside are all like this:
In the window is still the tourist sticker from Guatemala and on the dash are the toll receipts from Mexico:
I'd love to know if anyone sells correct interior panels. The guy advertising on TheSamba did not answer my email:
It does pollish up Ok, at least in this spot; I need a pollishing machine:
The battery corner is really bad and the right rocker panel is not very good. But I could not take pictures on the right side. |

^^^ Do not paint that bus. Fix what you need to fix to pass inspection, then blend in new paint in those areas.
As has been said, they are only original once. _________________ nothing |

On the way back from town in Bus for groceries a few days back- going to town being a 63 mile roundtrip- a nasty hammering growling noise was evident. It became very loud just as I pulled in to the yard- turned out to be the generator/fan pulley, which had somehow backed off the nut, gouged out the slots and tabs on the pulley halves, and appeared to have gnawed up the threads on the shaft.
Went ahead and ordered a new 6-volt generator from Parts Geek. That turned out to be a mistake- Parts Geek makes the late BFY Obsolete look like a well-oiled machine. I cancelled the order and invited them to go shit in their hat, give it a careful little flip, and put it on. In the meantime I managed to bring the shaft threads back from the dead and welded up the damage on the pulley halves.
It became necessary to go back to town and not wanting to test my Bus repair opted to drive the Beetle. Started it up, pushed in the clutch and felt the cable snap. Took the Bus instead, all was well. Now, maybe it's just me, but I think I'd rather pull an engine and transmission while wearing oven mitts and a tutu than do a Beetle clutch cable. I'm just really bad at it. It's a diabolical chain-yanker of a job that requires all sorts of foul language shouted loudly. Plus, on a humid day like today the job sucks shit through a straw with a diminishing circumference. Nevertheless I had a new spare cable on hand so...get after it, slugger.
Naturally the clutch hook on the pedal cluster was chewed up like an evil grin so back out came the welder and files and all that to beef it up, and this time I remembered, hey, try taking the Bowden tube off first and then the cable will come through easily instead of getting stuck like a 75-year-old after 3 days of Cream-Of-Wheat and cheese.
Why am I telling you all this? I think it's because old VWs develop sympathetic ailments, or maybe they get jealous of the attention the other is receiving and crap their drawers in protest. Anyway, that was my weekend. Still have to reinstall the Beetle seat but that's to be done after Happy Hour.

I feel lucky. All I did for my bus was call the local gendarme to come over for a VIN inspection. They did the work while my neighbors wondered why there was a police cruiser in front of my house.
Then I changed the tire. Time for happy hour here as well. I'll tip one for you, Dan. _________________ nothing |
