|
|
Just picked up an early 63 squareback. I'm assuming it needs the brakes to be redone.
Assuming I only have the early drums (and the shoes/hardware are missing), what parts will be compatible to make this work?
I don't know the differences between 61-63 drum brakes, and the 64+ drum brakes (both front and rear)
Anyone assist? |

do you have the backing plates?
61 and 62-63 are different from 64-65 for sure. not much will interchange
look into doing the wide 5 disc swap for the front - it may be cheaper than sourcing all new stuff. Old parts can be rebuilt, but if you have nothing, you'll probably want to go for the discs
on the rear, you can use all late model backing plates, shoes, wheel cylinders, and 64-65 drums with no issue _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

Pretty sure I still have backing plates, as the steel lines/flex lines are there.
Are the wheel cylinders the same as any other model aircooled?
Who makes a conversion kit? I'm assuming I'd need spindles of some sort. Are other bolt pattern rotors available than wide 5? |

Your car will have drum spindles: Your best option is the CSP disc kit. It bolts directly to the drum spindles without modifications - a true 'bolt on' option. There are options on wheel pattern.

You can get some later disc spindles and modify them to use with the EMPI or AC Industries Wide 5 Type 1 kit, also wide 5.

You'll want to replace your rubber lines of course
No, the front wheel cylinders are unique to middle of 62(I think) and '63. August of 64 through 65 are different, 66 went to disc (4lug)
CSP makes a complete kit - expensive
Airkewld makes a complete kit (expensive and not recommended by other forum members)
cheaper option is to use aftermarket ball joint bug wide 5 disc kit - instructions here --> http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=225527
as for other bolt patterns - yes. You could swap out to stock late model 4 lug type 3 discs and drums in the back. You can do the same and get readily available porsche 5 pattern rotors. you can also get blank rotors and have them drilled to whatever you want _________________ Stop dead photo links! Fred, if you want to go to a short axle rear assembly I have the wide 5 T3 drum brake assemblies I took off mine when I put the discs on. They are only a couple years old, the drums are cut down on the snout to fit the bug short axles. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Fronts - No.
Rears - You can use 64-65 rears. They are different but they work fine.
My '63 had later rears on there when I got it and I couldn't tell.
Post some pics of your new car too! _________________ How to Post Photos

Very good info from all above I would also strongly suggest you decide what rims you want to use because as far as I know there Isn't a disc kits available for the slotted 61-63 rims I could be wrong but from what I remember there's nothing _________________ Wow look at that THAT'S A "SHOW CAR"!!

Just so we know what we are working with, this is the Square in question
can't tell if the slotted rims are on there or not, at least it has correct hubcaps _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php
