Okay, way back in the early days of VW customs there were regional differences between what was done to VWs in the way of customizing them. "Cal-look" being one of them.
My question is, are there differences today in the "look" of VWs on the West Coast compared to the East Coast? (of the US, obviously) And, is California still the Trend Setter that it was back in the 60s,70s and 80s?

Cha, bro. When there is no oil, roads are faded pixels in a decaying museum, people are living in iCaves, there will be rust free CalTrend busses for the mystified curious. |

When I look at a custom feature car in a magazine I'm about 99.4% accurate when I guess which region it was built in. _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |

I would say there are even regional differences on the East Coast. Specifically, the "look" of vws above the VA/NC state line vs. the "look" of VWs below the VA/NC line. In my travels it seems like the southern east coast buses are either lowered, have other mods, etc. Where northern east coast buses tend to be more stock. I'm not saying there are not lowered or modified buses above the VA/NC line, but it seems like stock is king in that region.
Would it be fair to say that buses in the southern half of the states tend to have a lowered style and buses in the northern half tend to be more stock? _________________ 77 Westy - Cape Cod Sage

Considering the frost-heaved shitty roads of the northern climes, yes that is a fair statement.
I would theorize that the regional styles have become somewhat homogenized with the advent and long arm of the interwebs. Much easier now to quickly spread a trend and make it "mainstream" than it was back in the day.
Just a thought. _________________ nothing |

As does Hawaii. And Vegas.
I just recently moved from AZ to the PNW. Watercooled VW's are very popular up here, and they have a style that has started to migrate towards the air cooled cars as well. _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |

Very true, but even within Clubs there are congruent themes of style. Such as wheel choice.

In the modern import world there are "tuners" and "ricers", tuners customizing in the name of performance and ricers....um...wings, fart cans, and extreme camber.
What would the equivalent in the aircooled world be called? Racers? Hoodride? Ratride?
Performance will always be in style while fads come and go. When you make your classic a custom go for timeless not clueless! |

Also consider the (at that time) captive audience from a single source of media and where those magazines were all based. We no longer have to wait for the mailman to bring news of what's happening elsewhere every month, and most of that news isn't focused through a single point of view anymore either. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

"At the time" the trend Cal-look here in California was way too big for any magazine to pass up. It inspired magazines to bring the news to your door step. You were going to see or hear about it either way. A trend that is still here today and still growing strong. |

I feel lucky to have grown up and lived through the cal-look scene in the 70's and 80's in the San Diego area. My HS parking lot had several nicely done cal-look bugs in the early 80's. Cruising Valley Parkway on Friday nights also brought out tons of Cal-look VW's to show off and drag race on the back streets. Fun times..
I don't believe the "Cal-look" will ever reappear in the VW scene and if someone tried, it wouldn't get enough traction to develop. While there are still tons of bugs around, the days of the 100-500 dollar, nice bugs are far behind us. These cars are now classics and are gaining respectability in the collector world. You only have to look at the fact that bone stock, original VW's are demanding the highest prices as well. When I see a cal-look bug today, it just looks dated to me and out of place. Maybe I'm getting old. lol _________________ Contact me at [email protected]
