I just picked up a bone stock, base model, 1986 Scirocco. It's got about 250K on it but has been meticulously maintained. I've been enjoying it as is and had decided to just keep it in it's pristinely awesome, stock condition and resist the temptation to start doing modifications (they're only stock once) until a friend of mine offered me a turbo kit at a good price. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna take him up on his offer. My questions are -
- Will this affect my my ability to smog it in CA? It passed smog with flying colors last year after a new cat and has great oil and coolant pressure. I'm specifically concerned about the "visual test" and any effect it will have on actual emissions.
- Any experience on how much this will accelerate wear on the motor/transmission? Motor is in good shape for it's age, transmission makes grindy noises when shifting back into first before a complete stop but is otherwise okay.
- I had an '87 16V back in the day. Any commentary on how this should perform compared to it with mild boost?
I've never done this serious of a modification before but I'm pretty handy with a wrench and my friend has offered to guide me through the process (the turbo was previously on his rabbit so it should be pretty simple). Anyone have any advice/things to look out for before I commit?

Thanks for the plethora of responses! All the advice is greatly appreciated. Apparently this modification (and pretty much any other) is prohibited in CA. I'm told that incorporating in the state of Montana and then registering all my vehicles there is my best bet for circumventing CA emissions standards. _________________ 62 Single Cab

I wouldn't boost a CIS/CIS-e motor much above 10#'s. I would change to an efi system that also controlled spark to be able to retard timing while in boost. And I would also add an intercooler. Something like MegaSquirt or another standalone system.
And depending upon what engine code you have, a drop in CR would be an advisable mod to go along with the boost. |

I would go with an SDS-3 or 4 system... Much easier to program... A buddy runs it on His Turbo Scirocco and He's in the 10's.... easy peasy |

There isn't anything much easier than MS on a dist setup, w/ TunerStudio to tune the fuel map. Viable spark tables abound in various forums for a boosted 8V motor. And help is also available almost everywhere for MS. I have no idea what is out there for SDS, I had no idea they were even still around.
And after looking them up, a person could do a full blown MS3 setup for no more than half what they want for theirs. And have money left over for spare 020 trannies that are sure to get grenaded from living w/ boost. Or enough left over to have a quaife diff bought and installed to try to help the tranny live a little longer. |
