|
|
'67 Beetle, my door latch laid down on me yesterday. It is stuck in the latched position, with the door open, and I can't get the latch to release. I haven't gotten into the latch yet; I wanted to find out if this is common and if it's fixable before getting into it. I've never had a VW door latch do this before. I'm also afraid if it's broken that it is another one of those "'67 only" parts. Advice appreciated! _________________ Please check my '67 sedan project progress!

67 Latch is one year only part but the good news is that later latches can be easily modified to work. Hot VWs did an article on this mod not too long ago . Replacing the latch is not always necessary. You will have to get into the latch to see what is wrong. The return spring breaks usually on the drivers side because they get the most use. I think Wolfsburg west is stocking the spring again after several years of being MIA. Could just need a good cleaning and lube also. You wont know until you check it out. Even replacing the latch is not the end of the world. Show us some pictures once it is out. |

I have a VW that would somehow get in the latched position with the door open. All that was needed to fix was to pull the inside lever. Mentioning it on the chance you did not try that. |

What I've tried:
Opening from inside. Did nothing.
Carefully prying the striker latch up to try to get it to release with a screwdriver. It is stuck fast.
Once I have time to look at it more closely I'll report back. _________________ Please check my '67 sedan project progress!
