'53 -'55 had the clip on oil cap with the dimple but was longer than the earlier non clip/dimple 25 hp version. I can't tell from the picture which one but the distributor on that engine has a vacuum advance so it can't be a '53 because it would have the centrifugal only distributor if it were a '53.

Its got the round regulator. Its got the holed coil bracket. 30hp.
So I class that as right to go in the 54/55 Engine Thread.

Boy you guys are harsh. Derek is right to hesitate.

Dang...that inner belt is SO close to the generator pulley/nut. How close does it get when the engine is revved? That is a really sweet set-up!!! I like how the regulator was raised to clear the supercharger!!! NICE work!

Is that charger Speedwell or Pepco? They look similar.

Here's a recent shot of a Pepco in a 55 Barndoor. Good detail of a 54/5 30hp from another angle. I always think the long pump>carb fuel line looks a bit odd. Curved on the oval's engine.

Awesome thread. One of the most informative ive ever read. I know this is a replay to an older posting, but id like to add to what someone posted earlier about the strap style air cleaners vs. The "two clip" type.

I think janerick3 said that both knecht and Mann types were used in both 54 and 55. However, People keep saying that others have the "wrong air cleaner, that it should be the single strap type...."
I fan further confirm what janerick3 said. I have two "TWO clip" style cleaners, and one is date stamped 12/54 and the other is date stamped 8/55. Both are the exact Mann "two clip" air cleaners, not the single strap style.
Btw, does any one know what the smaller sized Mann air cleaners are from. I have a very original one that has the decal still on it. Its a Mann, but smaller in diameter than my other ones.....??

Interesting that a Speedwell engine would still run a DVDA beetle distributor. It's dated between December 1953 and July 1954 based upon the fact that there is a separation between the vacuum pipe port and the rest of the vacuum canister body. The other pic also had the vacuum advance but I cannot tell its vintage from the large scale photo.

The only factory ink stamp on a 36 hp fan shroud that I have ever seen is this one:

Just to the right of the oil fill. It's M 178 and I have to be very careful not to clean that area aggressively as I accidentally washed the stamp off the front side without even realizing it the first time I cleaned it. M 178 represents Speed Governor which was installed but rarely on buses only.

The distributor on the Barndoor Speedwell is either an 010 or 019 based on the badge. They were not manufactured until the mid 1960's. I would have chosen either a VJ 4 BR 2, 3 or 8 or perhaps a 1960 only VJ 4 BR 25 as more period correct for a Barny.

Nice restored 54/55 engine in a double-door bus.
Cant pick out too many differences from factory! Filter sticker, silver lower pulley nut, silver top pulley washers, blue coil?
Wondering if the tank>pump fuelpipe should have a gentler, uniform rear curve.
