I have lined my KG with anti rattle and MLV... I can hear draft coming from the doors and dash, so there is still some plugging work to do there.
On other hand a fella a while back told me that the racket I was hearing was also coming from air rushing through the dual carbs.
Apparently there is an expensive kit for bugs whereby you can box the air intake to muffle it.
Anyone know where I can find that? My plan is to adapt it to the Ghia. |

Anyone have any experience with the efficacy of these things? |

I rode in a car that had one of those once a long time ago.
And it did a very good job in keeping the noise level in the car down,
Especially on the highway.
Expensive, yes.
Possibly robs a bit of power.
But nothing will do more to keep a big motor civilized and quiet IMHO. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Thanks Chief - much appreciated.
I know it expensive, but as my KG is intended to be a daily driver, I think this makes sense.
All other feedback welcome - for the moment, I think the rattletrap and MLV is not enough. |

Wouldn't adding more sound deadening help? Behind the rear seat and maybe in the engine bay. _________________ ----------------------

I think the most restrictive part are those inlets. They look pretty small...
If you get it definitely run a K&N style gauze filter on that.
I've been looking for that part that goes on the carbs for IDF 44s but haven't seen a single one and the aluminum one are pretty small and better suited for pressurized intakes.
If you come across any on your search please PM me. _________________ Jesse

Anyone have a link to that Webber breather box set up? Do they still make it? Will it fit in the Thing engine bay? Any leads would be appreciated. Thanks Tom |

It seemed to me that a lot of noise came from the clicking and clacking of the motor reflecting off the road from the underside. More an issue when you're driving through the line at Starbucks than on the highway, of course. But you can certainly tell the difference between road surfaces with different acoustic properties.
My fix for that: http://www.evwest.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=40&products_id=220 _________________ 1970 KG Coupe

I wonder if one could be fabricated for less using turbo hats, etc. |

If you want quiet buy another car or a louder stereo. VW's will never be quiet. Consider the factory designed the engine to cruise at around 3400 RPM. Your modern cars cruise at like 2000 RPM or less. Putting that air cleaner set-up on will likely kill your performance.
My son did tons of dynomat and other sound deadening. There really was no difference pre and post. His is a 1776, berg stock valve heads, engle 120, 9:1, Doug Berg custom stepped header and dual 40 IDF. |
