The other day I noticed my brake pedal was harder then normal
I pulled the drums and still had over 1/8 inch of pad left so I did not replace the pads. I just adjusted them.
When I put everything back together it seem to work fine again.
Yesterday I noticed my brake lights were not coming on during my ride into work.
At lunch time I went out to check them again and they were working
This morning the harder pedal was back and my brake lights were not working again.
When I got to work I found if I pump my brakes the lights do come on.
I looked at the fluid in my master cylinder and it seems darker then normal (but I was looking at it in the dark with a flashlight)
Any idea? _________________ Thanks

If you have to pump them then you have air in the system. Just need to bleed them or you have a leak somewhere. _________________ Schrodinger's cat walked into a bar and it didn't.

Thanks for your quick reply
The brakes stop fine I just have to pump to get the light to work.
I will try beading them tonight if I can get the Ol'Lady to pump the brake pedal for me. _________________ Thanks

Pads?.... disc brake? drum brake?.... Flintstone?
Single or dual master?
Beetle, Rabbit.... ?
What the hell are we working on?
Two things come to mind..
The push rod for the master is improperly adjusted..
Believe it or not.. it can create a dynamic change in pedal feel at times.. all depends on brake fluid temp and whether it can return the fluid to the reservoir when the pedal is released.....or not.
A bad brake switch or two.

It has drum brakes with about 1/8 inch left on the shoes
It has 1, 3/4 EMPI master cylinder
Last year I put larger wheel cylinders on. I found the ones from the front of a Beetle would fit the back and they had larger cylinders
The adjustment on the master cylinder push rod does not look like it changed ant and my brakes have always worked well
Funny thing is I has the problem for a couple days but it has been fine since. Not sure why _________________ Thanks

I had that happen in an old International after changing the master cylinder. _________________ Schrodinger's cat walked into a bar and it didn't.
