Just noticed a ad that new windshields are available in Kimberton, Pa, but he won't ship. Must be pick-up only. |
Can you post a link to the ad?....I will be within 1 hour of Kimberton in a week. Ray |
I think I've talked to this guy- I take my Volvo to the shop next door. I met him at a local car show. I haven't had the money but I wanted to buy some windshields from him. Anyway, let me know if you have a spare minute in PA. _________________ '74 412 wagon

Don't know if it helps anyone but at least two companies here in Finland are making custom windshields, whatever you want and they cost only an arm, not arm&leg.
I can ask if anyone is interested .... heck, I'll ask anyway, I found the phone number for the other.
And I've a surplus windshield which can be used as a template (as the one in the car is quite bad).
But windshield seal is still a problem. _________________ Kharon -- '62 typ1, '63 typ14, '61 typ21, '65 typ34, '74 412, '75 typ26

If those companies already have the mold for 412/412 windshield, it shouldn't be that expencive -only about 150 euros if i remember correctly. But if they have to make a new mold the price will be about the double of that. I have asked the prices from Kuttilan autolasi but it was so many years ago it's possible i don't remember correctly. But anyway the prices weren't as high as i was expecting. Other company that produces windshields is Jaakko-tuote. Both companies might even have correct windshield in stock.
I know atleast Kuttilan autolasi will ship worldwide and the quality is very good. _________________ My cars: 1972 VW 411 Variant; 1973 VW 412 4d sedan |

You remember exactly correctly, I called Kuttilan Autolasi today and they said they have molds/recipes/dimensions for 411/412 windshield. AFAIK they've CNC-machines so just dimensions are enough.
Current price is about 200 euros and packing about 20e on top on that + freight of course.
That includes VAT 25%, so outside of EU you might get that off the price.
Manufacturing time is about 2 weeks and they have a gmail-address for contacts, kuttilanautolasi.
I also PM'd ubercrap and suggested this into FAQ, let's see what happens. _________________ Kharon -- '62 typ1, '63 typ14, '61 typ21, '65 typ34, '74 412, '75 typ26

Did you go to Kimberton? I'm curious about the windshields. I was hoping to see if we could negotiate something for you to get one for me, and bring it to Ok. on your next trip here. Bob |

OK Ray hope all went well on your trip. I just learned yesterday, I may have the opportunity to ride with a friend on one of their trips to Des Moines. Didn't know they went up that way visiting relatives. Bob |

Has anyone installed seals from de Keverspecialist? They are quoting me 220€ for the whole set. Also, does their rubber have the groove for the aluminum trim?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, - Ron |

Rubber for a 411
I'm looking for windshield rubber for a 1971 411 that I'm restoring for my wife.
Mechanically the car is perfect. It's time for the body.
I'm looking for rubber for the windshield but also ALL the remaining windows as well.
Does anyone have a definitive answer on where to get this or what to do? |

The previous link in this thread to Kieverspecialist.....will be your only option to just buy something. Its either NOS or a repro from a while back.
Outside of that...there will be nothing you can just buy. The seal profile was unique to this car.
However with a little work you can use either type 3 seals......98% same cross section.....cutting up several sets and using the curved corners where needed ane joining with 3M black weatherstrip adhesive.
For front and rear windshield I have used Bay bus rubber....it fits well....a little tight...slightly larger outer profile....but workable. ....but not on the tight curves on the side windows.
I have a method i have tested partially that is a modification. Takes a little 2ork but would allow the use of super beetle rubber...again joined for fit. I have no had time to install a full windshield with it yet. Ray |

I have a lead on obtaining a used side window seal w/molding groove. That said, I spoke to the Company in my above post (Steele) and they said that they will try to match the used seal profile to one in their inventory.
If all works out, I plan on sending the used piece to them immediately after I get it. I'll keep you posted. -Ron |

Looks like I have an opportunity to get my hands on a few new windshields. Very limited quantity. I do know that they'll fit a '73 T4 Variant, but haven't checked compatibility with other years. I'm mainly interested in trades. (a decent roof rack, door seals...). If interested, feel free to touch base with me via PM, perhaps we can work something out. -Ron _________________ 1973 412 Wagon

As far as I know the fit is the same for all years. Ray |

Even better news for those who may need one. I believe Kiever still has the glass seals for the T4, but only Cal-style, no groove for trim. _________________ 1973 412 Wagon

The book has three windshield part #'s. The size and fit is the same.
411 845 101 early with non-laminated safety glass
411 845 101 A for M-89 laminated safety glass
411 845 101 B "heat protection glass" M-671
If memory serves....M-671 has the tinted top edge or may be tinted everywhere. Ray |
