I recently bought myself a 1955 convertible, Beautiful little car. It has a few bugs that need to be worked out. The car has a repro center mount antenna, The problem when you open the top it hits the antenna.

SO being that center mount antenna are prominently found on split Beetles, and there are many split verts with center mount antenna I was hoping I can get some good advice here.

Does an original antenna telescope down enough that would be below the roof line?

Or perhaps are there different length upper roof mount pieces that would space it out a little more ?

As it is right now the antenna is cut towards the top and is removable for when opening and closing the top, I would like to have an original antenna and to fix this problem.

Tangent question, where only cabriolets sprayed with 2 tone.

Love the look of black on red, considering for my 11g but originally all black.

Here is a BOSCH center mount radio antenna. No problem to open and close the top.

while i doubt too many split sedans were painted 2-tone, that is what i did. Black L41 and Hellelfenbein really dressed up the car. Would do it again. Current car is metallblau, so no reason to go 2 tone

Could it be that on Convertibles, the upper mount for the antenna is a bit longer than sedan. I have seen a pict of a center mount antenna on a heb and there it seems that the upper part is furthere away from the frame. I can not load it up as it is not my pict. will ask if allowed.

I've been wondering if there could be a convertible specific upper mount, the one on my car measures at about 58mm from front to back.

I was looking at my antenna a little closer tonight, it looks like I may be able to clear the roof if I can get the right pitch in a bendable center mount antenna.

I received in the mail today an original bendable Hirschmann, put a little bend in and mocked it up, still not getting the clearance I need. I then stacked as many little washers as I could (about 1/2") onto the screw of the upper mount to space it out and still not getting the clearance I need, It looks like if there is in fact a taller upper mount for convertibles it needs to be about 1" longer in length.

I had always assumed there was no upper mount on a Kabriolet as they don't have the flat spot above the screen that saloons have to fit the upper support into.

I am pretty sure mine (which is in a box somewhere) does not have a top mount for it - maybe I need to find one?

Cheers,

Dave
