I have visited this site over the last year hundreds of times and can usually find the answer but this issue st stumping me. Way back in 1979 I turned 15 and bought my first 914. Well last year I turned 51 and bought myself a 75' 914. The car had been sitting in a field for years. It was far from stock and looked like it had been messed with allot. Well, to make a long story short I have finally got it back to stock. Here is the question.
It originally was a 2.0. At some point the motor was rebuilt. As it turns out the block is a 1.8 but the heads are 2.0. I have managed to replace the carb with the original fuel injection . All the componates ECU MPS etc are all for a 75 2.0. I don't know if the cylinders are bored or not?
Should I time it as per instructions for a 1.8 or for a 2.0

The block makes no difference. Except for fairly insignificant casting differences...they were all the same. There is nothing special about a 2.0 block.
You can build a 1.7, 1.8 or 2.0...just by swapping parts. No machine work.
"Typically"...if it has 2.0 heads....it has 2.0 cylinders and pistons...although there have been at least one time I have seen when someone tried to assemble a 2.0 using 2.0 pistons and a 1.7/1.8 crank with a shorter stroke...usually doesn't even run. The key is the 2.0 has a 71mm crank stroke (compared to 66mm for 1.7 and 1. and 94mm pistons (compared to 90 or 93).
If it has the injection for a 2.0...then it has D-jet injection...correct? (it should). I hope for your sake....it also has the cam for the 2.0. What did you have done to the engine and what cam was used.
If it was originally a 1.8L.....USA version....the cam "should" have been the same as the 1.7L....which was largely the same as the USA 2.0L....so it will be fine as long as USA spec D-jet cam was used. That also includes a Web Cam $73 or a Raby 9550 or 9590.
Its the valve timing and lobe center that are important.
If it was a Euro 1.8 from a VW 412 or Porsche 914....and that cam was reused.....the cam will have issues running D-jet injection....but only a little running L-jet injection.
If it is from a 1.8 with carbs...European edition....the cam will have issues with D-jet tuning.
To start with.....which 2.0 heads does it have? Do they have three or four studs holding the intake manifolds on? Can you post a picture of the injection system main manifold?
I would time it to the 2.0 spec....which is the same as the 1.7 spec...which will not hurt a 1.8....and will tell you a bit about what you have by how it runs. Ray |
