Fully threaded, I added a pic to my post above to be 100% clear.
The shouldered one above is the screw for the front seats.

I'm getting ready to upholster my middle seat and am hoping someone can explain how the back is assembled. I've scrolled this entire thread and it's partially addressed on page 27 that there is a card installed under the cover. My question is how is the seam at the bottom of the back cover joined to the front cover where it comes around the bottom of the frame?

Both ends of the upholstery cover tuck into the lower rear frame tube, that has a slot in the back of it to tuck the ends in. Here are a few pix of a seat that I restored recently in my shop.
Middle seat backrest cover in place for final pull.
Back and front portions pull and tuck into this little slot in frame.
It was a very tight squeeze, especially the areas around the middle leg that my upholstery guy modified/reinforced.
Finished tuck.

This is a 1966-ish bus middle seat that I restored in my shop.
Seat covers and coco pads are from Wolfsburg West. Covers are actually TMI, I think. I used wire wherever possible, instead of string, to anchor seat covers to frames. Some modifications were necessary to make covers work with pre-'67 seat.
Frames and springs were repaired, using an early bay window front seat for replacement middle seat backrest springs that had rotted. Frames and spring sets were de-rusted, primed and painted.
Seat springs were covered with burlap (dark brown color) hog ringed to springs, coco pads (light brown color) and batting (white color).
Original grab handle was re-used with new ends and center cap.
Before:
Broken backrest springs.
Bay window donor seat.
Replacement springs (4) installed on left side of backrest.
Outer frame was also reinforced using sections of frame sandwiched on with metal clips.
The 'tuck' slot was straightened and cleaned as best as possible.
Frame painted.
Burlap over springs to protect bottom sides of coco pads.
Batting was placed over coco pads and tucked into springs. You can also see pull wire here, which replaced flimsy string, as supplied.
Seat bottom cover is on.
Ashtray mount dimensions on backboard.
Upper screw was added to hold new backing panel to seat frame.
Reinforcement plate for ashtray mount, on inside of backboard.
I re-used the original mount plate after rust treating and fresh paint.
We all know how this part works.
Pulling and tucking backrest cover is hard work on the fingers.
This shows the modifications I had my upholstery guy stitch up to make the seat cover work with a pre-'67 seat.
Customer ordered '67 seat covers, but middle seat is actually a '66 or earlier model with slightly different seat leg locations than the '67 seats.
Original grab handle was cleaned and re-used. New end caps and center cap are from Brad "volksheime"; http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1411448

Anyone know if the middle seat screw above is correct |
I have a seat with the same fastener. M8X1.25 X 18mm thread length, threaded along entire length. The other fastener from the same seat is a hex head. It is an early seat. I have seen photos of other early seats that have a hex head fastener. The thread is the same though.
Later seats I've seen have two with a head like the one you posted. Not sure when the change was or if it was consistent. |
Thanks.
I have seen some seats with normal hex heads bolts too but I always figured those were replaced because they fell out. My other '63 seat, which has been recovered, has a bolt in it like that.
I checked my '55 Bus and it has the same round head fastener above on both sides of the fold-down. It's the original seat and I believe they are original.

Sorry to interrupt the rebuild conversation, but just wanted to comment that Everett's explanation makes alot more sense. I agree that the hex headed bolts are probably random bolts people replaced originals with. I've only seen a few hex heads and if an original needed replacement it makes sense that it would be a hex. Also, why would VW use two different styles? _________________ Please buy my Treasure |

GREAT work on this seat. My 2/3 middle is sitting downstairs, painted and ready for upholstery. I'm psyching myself up for the job, knowing how the front buckets were to do.
Stan, what card did you use for the seat back insert, and where did you get it?
Also, I have my arm rest remains sitting on my coffee table, pondering solutions. Will start experimenting soon and post any reasonable (or really terrible) results. |

I also should have said that of the seats that I have owned and can remember, those that had a hex head bolt only had it on the outside edge, where it could easily be removed or fall out.
The inside one, which is sort of stuck in there because of the seat material, had the normal round screw pictured above. _________________ How to Post Photos

Everett's description is exactly the way my seat is, round head on the inside portion of the flipper and hex head on the outside. _________________ 58 Coral Red ragtop(Diana's car)

I used door panel material that I got from my upholstery guy to make the panel for the back of the seat. It was a little thicker than the original black backing panel. I used a few interior panel screws with collars to secure it to the seat frame. It seems like the original backing panel was not attached to the seat frame, but perhaps just held in place by the seat cover.
One of the backing panel mounting screws I used is shown here, above the rivets for the ashtray mount.
Any detailed pictures of the armrest pad and mounting bracket could be helpful to me. thanks _________________ Stan's Classic Service, specializing in air-cooled VWs:

The hex heads I have seen were on the outside as well. Add "check tightness of outer middle seat screw" to the maintenance list _________________ Please buy my Treasure |

I'm thinking vacuum formed plastic negative mold filled with dense urethane two part foam over a metal screw bar would be the way to reproduce the arm rest. Paint with Krylon fusion flexible plastics paint.
