Just saw this on the Berrien Buggy site.
It is with much sadness that we have to announce today the passing of one of the Founding Fathers of the Dune Buggy industry, David Merkel. Dave founded Berrien Buggy in 1968, with $75 and a Volkswagen Beetle. Over the years, he grew the company to include parts sales, chassis design and development, an off-road race team, and the production of fiberglass dune buggy bodies and accessories. His knowledge of VWs and buggying has helped thousands of customers over the years to enjoy our sport.
I worked for Dave from 2000, through the sale of the company to Acme in 2012. I considered him and his wife Sue, to be the closest thing to a second set of parents I ever had. I was a 17 year old graphic design student when they came to my high school looking for someone to help out in the office, updating and mailing brochures. Even at my beginning there, the business always felt like family. Dave took me under his wing and taught me fabrication skills, and the basics of Volkswagen drivetrain and suspension. Dave always had a soft spoken and humble manner about him, and a warm smile and handshake for any customer who walked through the door. His Seventh-Day Adventist faith was extremely important to him, and he strove to be as Christ-like as he could be in all of his dealings with people. His honesty and integrity were unparalleled in our industry. He will be greatly missed.

Gabriele Ferzetti died yesterday (March 17th 1925 - December 2nd 2015).
Italian actor, maybe best known for portraying railroad magnate Mr. Morton in Once Upon a Time in the West and for the bad guy in Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Probably doesn't mean much to anyone under 50, but if you've ever upgraded an old record player by installing a Pickering Cartridge you know how important this guy was.
Norman C. Pickering, Who Refined the Record Player, Dies at 99
Quote: |
Norman C. Pickering, an engineer, inventor and musician whose pursuit of audio clarity and beauty helped make phonograph records and musical instruments sound better, died on Nov. 18 at his home in East Hampton, N.Y. He was 99 . . . .
Record lovers, however, probably owe him the most. In 1945, Mr. Pickering, who enjoyed listening to records and was frustrated by the sound quality of recordings, developed an improved pickup that is, the mechanism that includes the phonograph needle, or stylus, and translates the information in the groove of a record into an electrical signal that can be reproduced as sound.
Previous pickups were heavier and more unwieldy; styluses were made of steel, they needed to be replaced frequently, and the weight of the mechanism wore out records after a limited number of plays.
The so-called Pickering pickup (and later, its even more compact iteration, the Pickering cartridge) was introduced just as the favored material for records was shifting from shellac to vinyl, which had a lower playback noise level.
Originally designed for use in broadcast and recording studios, it was a fraction of the size of earlier models, and it replaced the steel of the stylus with a significantly lighter and harder material sapphire or diamond which lasted much longer and traced a more feathery path along the record. Because of it, records lasted longer and original sounds were reproduced with less distortion. |

Yes, the Pickering cartridge was the choice of purists, and was advertised as such by the turntable manufacturers. I never knew it was named for a person (at least one I knew of), but the brand name stood for something.
It allowed for very light tracking (under a gram), preserving the record and stylus. |
