Hello - Looking for a complete 1971 Squareback oil change kit, new screens, filters, etc. for a 1971 FI.
Any good recommendations on kits? Everyone run 10/30w in these as well?
Thanks

Ok, someone's gotta be nice and answer, so I'll do it.
For oil, this is the master thread....other discussions get locked more or less right away:

Generally, the screen is only replaced if damaged. Otherwise, you can blow it out with compressed air, carb/brake cleaner, etc. It's not a bad idea to have a spare one on hand. EMPI makes a full kit including the screen. I've never purchased it so I can't vouch for the quality:

Most folks just buy a boatload of these from the usual parts suppliers:

Thanks for being nice. New to the type 3 world. Just making sure I'm not missing anything with an FI engine. |

Same kit as in every 1600 motor, regardless of Type and fuel system.
(EDIT: Actually, all 40HP and up since the early 1960s).
By the way, in the photo shown above, it looks like the cheap kit with the oil drain plug seal just a plain washer, rather than the fiber-embedded version that has the proper crush ability to seal correctly. And I bet those small washers are just copper coated, not pure copper. This kit can work but it is not tolerant of mishandling or burrs on the sealing surfaces like the original style kits were. Just another resample of crappy parts quality creeping into the VW world.
See this one? It's more like a doughnut than a washer:

I buy my kits off eBay. They're German kits with gaskets and pure copper washers, and free shipping. I don't have the seller name offhand, but a little searching will find them. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Thanks Everett, that's the one I've ordered before:

As you say, you could get them a little cheaper if you're ordering some other parts also, since you'd already be paying shipping, but if you just need the change kits it's cheaper to do the eBay thing. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Last ones I got were from autozone. Those and the cork valve cover gaskets were the best ones I've run across . The oil kit gaskets and copper seals were top notch. The oil cover gaskets are a bit thicker and are black I felt they were better than the paper ones. |
