Has anyone tried AirKewld's wide 5 "Bad" front disks? I am trying to do the same & switch over to a wide 5 on my 68' fasty, without breaking the bank. I called them & was told that Type 3 guys with stock disks can directly replace the disk/hub with theirs & pick the adapter pattern (for an extra $50ea). It still isn't "cheap", but man it looks nice, & still seems to be the most cost effective way to change over the front end.

Thanks for the heads up! (That thread went down hill fast.) Both of those kits are for a full Drum to Disk conversion though, including new spindles and calipers, which seems to be were the trouble started.
Airkewld is telling me that those of us with factory disks on our Type 3's can simply replace the stock disk/rotors with their units, leaving in place the stock spindle and caliper. As their replacement disk/rotors are $225each "in any small wheel pattern" and an additional $50ea for the wide 5x205, once you toss in some new bearings & seals, you'll be out around $600 total in order to convert the front beam from 4x130mm to 5x205mm. And you'll be able to swap out the 5x205 for say 5x130 without removing them... Almost seems too good.
I haven't been able to find anyone who's actually done this swap though. |

If that's the case, they'd be better off advertising that conversion since it eliminates the biggest issue with the kit: bracket fit and imperial hardware in metric threads.
I'd test it out for you to confirm his claim if I had a disk spindle. |

I agree. However it sounds like a crock of shite to me. A cheaper way of going to the Porche pattern or a Chevy pattern would be to buy a set of rotors already drilled for them. Then you'd only need to swap the rotors, and re-use everything else. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

That's because nobody has figured out how to clear the caliper with the wide 5 hub, AND keep the caliper in the same spot.
If you want wide 5's, do a search, as there's a great thread on converting disc spindles to allow the wide 5 bug disc kit to bolt on (you do have to cut off the existing caliper mount, and drill and tap some new holes). Not exactly an afternoon job, but it could be done in a weekend. I did it on my 64 T-34, and it worked out great. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Just test fitted 185/65R15 tires on new Empi Sprintstar 15x5 wheels. Great fit and no rubbing. Car is stock height. I will post more pictures once the car has all four tires/wheels installed.

944T all the way around. All adapters by Lanner at http://vdubengineering.com/
Not gonna fib. Lanner moved from the greater Toronto area across the continent to Alberta so he's been a little slow getting back up and running.. this is my second car he's done adapters for (I did 944T brakes all the way around on my 65 bug a few years ago as well)...but he's worth waiting for...

Very nice Daniel! Do you have any pics of the adaptors? Does he make for Type-3 drum spindles or do they work for disc spindles?
Here's my notch with early 911 steelies, Bert3 spindles & stock Type-3calipers/discs. I'd like to upgrade to Wilwood calipers, but also keep the Bert3 spindles.

Thanks Daniel!
I will be giving him a call for sure as i have a few more questions that aren't answered on the website. It looks like most of his stuff is designed for the later t3 than the early ones. He says that he can make adapters for any car, so that is promising! Ill probably have to pick up a set of dropped spindles and send them to him. What did you do for the rear?
Critter - Your notch looks sweet on those porsche steelies! |
