hi guys

just bought a 73 riviera camper a couple days ago. Not pay that much for the bus and it is in great shape (compared to those rust bucket we usually found around on the east coast). it is neptune blue which is one of my favorite vw color.

it is proudly wearing a darker blue paint apply with brush and roller. very nice job Rolling Eyes

most of the bus seems original, no wiring hacked, original headliner, solid floor, ect

my plans are to have it run and mechanically good before doing any body woork.

Looks great. When is the last time it started? I bought one not long ago and recommend cleaning the fuel tank, carbs (rebuild) and replace all the fuel and vacuum lines.
German Supply in Toronto makes a great kit for the lines.

How does it turn over by hand? Put a wrench on the alternator bolt and turn it clockwise.

How does the oil look?

Did it sound like there was anything gone wrong inside the motor while cranking it? Any bangs or clunks?

Not necessarily. Take 62CdnNotch's advice and use a wrench. You might just have good compression Wink

yes... i mean by hand with a wrench Laughing
i finally come to the conclusion that it is a way lot easier when the tranny is on neutral... Embarassed it does turn...so good news nothing stuck there.

i also change the starter for another one i know its working, drain the old gas,new gas filter, new gas pump filter, oil is ok.

again when trying to start the starter turns very very slowly... then nothing

may be something with the ignition switch and its connections??

I would change the Battery cables (both), the tranny ground strap and clean all terminals at the starter.
Is that a new battery, or just a newly charged battery? Try jumping it with a running vehicle and see what happens (after you try the above)

I like Neptune blue too, great color. You may be able to remove that brushed on paint and get back the original paint if you're careful.

looking at the battery cable i saw that the wires coming from the alternator were all melted down.

so i remove the alternator to change it for another one i have.

That's not as easy as i sounds with the engine in. I remove the two tin in front of it to finally get it out.

Engine not running yet. There is a couple wiring issues. I will also need to change the transmission ground strap. It is completly shot.

In another hand i find out that the camper may not be a Riviera as it was manufactured by J.D.King of the road in BC.

Any info on that?

update.

finally have time today to work on the bus. I clean the carb, it was full of kind of ''orange mud", then a shot of carb cleaner and it finally start after a couple attempt.

turn rough but it is running.

the bad thing is fumes coming from the dash vent will probabably means shot heater boxes.....
