I screwed up ,i was checking my engine this morning and noticed my fan belt was loose ,so i took couple of shims out and was perfect ,took a drive to store when i was gettin ready to leave i started the engine and it sounded like the pulley was grinding so i thought ...actually it started and the starter stayed engaged (its happen before but all i do is pull the key back a lil and the starter disengages)thats where the brain fart came in it just completely by pass my brain ,so drove it about half a block the it disengaged got home and now it just spins when i turn the key ...did the starter messed up my flywheel ,or just the starter..any comments are welcome

I think just messed up the solenoid on the starter....if you pull the starter you can see some flywheel teeth through the hole...and if OK then see if you can get the solenoid working to push out the starter gear so it can engage.

Bad luck. You'll have to whip out the starter and have a look. I'd say u need a new starter, the flywheel is probably ok.

This happened to me a few decades ago, with a relatively new "rebuilt by Bosch" starter. Mrs. Cusser was driving it, she said all of a sudden while cruising the funny noise started, turns out that the starter engaged on its own (she didn't touch it, and we VW folks know that the ignition switch has a safety in it to prevent that anyway).

I needed a new starter, was well within the warranty period; 1st location said it "had to" have been her fault, wouldn't swap out. So I took it partially apart, and intentionally really messed it up (hammer and screwdriver), then 2nd location readily swapped it out......still spinning the engine great today - and I mean today !!!
