Pull the dash switch... "+" & "3" are direct (high speed) connections marked on the switch & connector... _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

12v at both fan switches.
Switches metered out ok
I didn't see a relay to operate fans-is there one?
Is there any way to identify ground for fan on grounding star?
All grounds are same color & they are not numbered.
Thanks |

You need to read the wiring diagram ...... if you know how to.
You would know that........
There is no relay.
There IS a resistor for the front fan.
All grounds are the same color on the entire vehicle... They are not marked.
Find your ground wire for the fan? A simple continuity test will tell you.
If you've got 12v into the switch and 12v out of the switch you've got...
A. Bad grounds
B. Bad connections at the blower
C. Bad resistor for the front though high speed does NOT use the resistor
D. Bad blower motors
E. Cut wires
Focus on the rear fan, easy to get to.

12v at switch
Jumper + to I, II or III no fan
No continuity between III & ground
No ohmic reading between I, II or III & ground
i should be reading some sort of ohmic value through resistors and or windings
Am I correct in assuming next step is to remove dash?
Rear fan does no good defrosting front windows
Rear blower does not spin freely anyhow so I'm guessing it's shot
Thanks |

Got power at the heater motors? |
????? From your posts it doesn't sound like you've done this yet....As Dave said, concentrate on the rear heater its the easiest to work on. You can check the motor ground continuity at the same time. |

No,
Is there's a magical way to check power at motor unit w/out remiving dash?
Unless the rear heater defrosts Windows I will follow critcal path and repair/replace make operable window defrost unit.
Thanks |

You have 2 heating systems in the van that exhibit the same or similar problem. Just suggesting that you find the problem on the easier system to work on, it may lead to an "Aha" moment regarding the front heater possibly negating the need to open up the dash. |

If you have power to the ground wire when it is disconnected from the body then you are at leasts are passing some current through the motor. You could also read the amp draw on the motor if you have a meter available with a high enough amp scale. If the motor is just frozen up it will draw considerable amps while if it is burnt out it will draw little if any amps. |

I'll bring my ampprobe home tomorrow
Thought if motor was froze fuse would blow
I'll check current draw tomorrow
Thanks for the tips |

Physically traced ground following switch wires where they enter fan housing
Ohm between III position (bypassing resitor) & ground
Open ckt
Open ckt also between positions I & II & ground |

Sounds like that dash is coming out of there. |

He most certainly verify if he has power going out of the switch on all speeds, with an easy to use ice pick type voltage tester.
Front & rear heater.
If he wants to probe the wire at the outside of the heater enclosures , he could do that also.
I wonder why he didn't start checking for juice in both of these area's , then ask guestions.
Ice pick 12 volt tester.
Can't pissibly get any easier to use for diagnostic voltage testing.
Wouldn't hurt to check both switchesvoperation either. _________________ T.K. |

Terry
Pulled the switch
12v at switch
Made jumper w/scrap wire
Jumper from + to I, III & II switch positions
Shouldn't fan turn if I bypassed switching mechanism w/jumper?
Thanks |

Your fan WOULD turn, if it wasn't seized from 30 years of dusty air crammed into the tail bearing...D@~n Germans!

Ditto.
If you have power, and an excellent, clean ground, 1+1 still equals 2.
Correct, it should spin.
Happy trails to you, the dash, & heater box have to come out.
Phooey.
Get the rear heater working would be another avenue of heat.
A little cool up front, but better than driving totally naked in the cold.
Cleveland can get a bit nipplie this time of year.
Got a garage to work in?
Better working conditions. _________________ T.K. |

FWIW: Until the dash deed is done & if you find need defrosting, put all the heat up
on the windshield and toss it around with a clamp-on 12v fan. At least while you're
moving, the ram air will provide the heat & the little fan will provide the power.
It worked for me for about 4 years... _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender
