So, I got my filler neck from CIP that was sold as OEM VW, and they still insist that it is, and that they get them directly from VW in Germany. What a piece o crap. It is thin, flimsy, and the screw holes don't line up well and need to be stretched to fit. It has no VW logo or part number and appears to have been trimmed by hand with scissors. Has anyone come across a vendor selling a NOS or OE filler neck (birds beak or without). I don't want to do this job again soon, and would like to find a part that lasts. Please advise if you've run across a supply in your travels. Thanks. |
Dan, what you want is to get one from Scott at German Supply, or Bus Boys. Theirs are the most robust available at this time, although in my opinion they could be thicker rubber still. I went through this in 2010 when I changed mine. The thin ones are absurd, and unacceptable.
The ones without the bird's beak are all you'll find, and they work fine. My '78 bus is a Calif. model, and originally had the bird's beak version as well. _________________ 1978 Sage Green Westfalia (Happy Trails, SOLD)

I learned this lesson quite some time ago. Don't buy anything from CIP. _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

Good to know. I'll try Busboys. What frustrates me is that the $20 CIP1 filler neck is advertised as OE VW, which it clearly is not. It is so thin and flimsy I'm sure it would tear if you farted within 10' of it. _________________ *****************

I wanna say the one I got from busboys was VW part. The others I got from some of my favorite vendors were junk. No thicker than a condom. _________________ Special Thanks to:

and the metal ring that was in it is probably in the gas tank? The design was a POS. Get the late style narrow restrictor plate if you are ever required to have one for smog. The fill worse than the wide ones so only put it on for smog. For practical purposes leaded gas doesn't exist anymore so it is a moot point. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Anyone have a recent recommendation on where to source a good quality one?
I have been trying for a month to get a hold of someone at Bus Boys where I got one in the past but it seems like they are no longer in business.
Thanks! _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

Hey Boss, looks like a hard to find item at this time. Bus Depot has these.

I agree that the good version is now hard to find. Hard to be certain from the picture but that BD one looks like the poor quality version that has been floating around. The description does not inspire confidence. _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

FWIW, if you do end up with the bird-beak style, cut the beak off before you install it.
The ethanol that is in today's fuels will cause it to dry and crack.
As the filler nozzle from the gas pump goes in and out, pieces of the beak will break off.
This will end up in your gas tank, and cause all kinds of fun.
If your smog shop fails you for not having the bird beak, then find another smog shop. _________________ Bus Motor Build

The bird beak style has been NLA for a very very very long time. I have the restrictor plate so no worries about smog passage for that reason.
I decided to go with this:
http://www.gowesty.com/product-details.php?id=3373
I am hoping that the price = quality. _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

Here is the item from GOWESTY:
It has the VW part number and logo cast in the rubber. It seems durable and thick. It was nearly $40 (shipping and tax) but worth it IMHO.
FWIW - A local said Bus Boys looked semi-abandoned on a recent drive by. _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

And, not a high price mark-up even though it came from the Father-Land.
Go Westy does have some great deals as long as you take the time
to ask.
I have bought quite a lot of items from them and only had one' fubar' from
them. _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

So I’m replacing fuel lines and decided to remove the gas tank and replace the various hoses. In threads I’ve looked at regarding the filler neck people kept referring to the bird beak style and I just had no idea what they were referring to. After removing the metal restrictor plate and the rubber filler hose, I now know what they are talking about:D
My question is this; with the non bird beak style does anyone experience occasional overflowing (it’s not really overflowing but that’s what it looks like when gas is pouring out)? I’m in California if it matters. Has anyone found a quality replacement (gowesty’s version was the last one to be praised)?
Also does anyone have the part number for the hose that goes from filler neck to gas tank? It looks pretty generic and I’d love to get something more modern than the braided rubber that’s on there now.

Check this thread...
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9154182#9154182
I replaced the old braided filler hose a couple years ago and it worked well.
(But make sure the hose clamps are placed correctly and tightened well,
or else you'll have to try to access that are a with the engine in place.
Been there, and don't wanna go there again.)
And regarding the bird beak...
I don't have one in mine, and it passed the Calif smog inspection twice.
So it's possible it's not required anymore. It's my understanding the bird beak was to prevent inserting the larger leaded fuel nozzle. And those are long gone in CA too. _________________ -Kent-
