"... the 1972 model increased in value by 48 percent this year."

"THE AVERAGE VALUE FOR A
1972 Volkswagen 181 Thing
4dr Convertible 4-cyl. 1585cc/60hp 1bbl
$ 21,846"

Wowsers!

72s are much more rare and not officially imported.

While the 73s and 74s were regularly imported.

Is that about right?

Pretty sure it's not a US model. 72s were running around Mexico

Barret Jackson has a frame off restored Thing this week...73. Seems like this is the one..

$33,000 pretty strong I'd say. But then Hemmings rated it a top ten collector car for the next 5 years/

Hagerty's values are based upon auction hammer prices. With the relatively few number of 181's and Things out there, and the propensity for auctions to have only running, driving, and fairly nice examples, the prices Hagerty shows are much more than what a typical example purchased off craigslist would be.

I'm more interested in TTS's Thing that's going on Barrett-Jackson. Not only is it correctly done, it's being sold at the auction that generates the highest prices ever for anything sold there. The hammer price there will show us all what the true upper end of Thing pricing is.

I would agree, there are three Thing's listed on St. Louis Craigslist as of WED, 01/27/2016, one that would need a lot of labor to get running for $ 4000 USD, the other two are at best parts cars for $ 3500 USD.

That one went for 18,250, I wonder if the buyer realized it has no heater what-so-ever.
