I doubt it will be a match. 66 used short axles and a different type of bearing retainer and seal system. Doesn't yours have the spinning oil slinger? 68 and up would have the oil weep hole system through the backing plate. Possibly even double jointed IRS instead of swing axle. Makes me think there will be a difference or differences. _________________ 1958 Karmann Ghia owner |

WELCOME.
Check dutchboy mike over in Irwindale. I don't know where you are at but Mike has plenty of adds here. Looks like his name here is [email protected]. He operates a shop over in Irwindale a few miles east from the Irwwindale drag strip.
Also Russ' in same town. Should be plenty here in SoCal.
Hope this helps, Bill. |

I have a related question.
My installation has dropped spindles by CB Performance. The version with drum brake spindle with ball joint beam. It is installed with CSP front disks having bearings compatible with the drum brake spindle.
There is no backing plate provided. So I am wonder if running without a backing plate would pose a problem with stones and debris fouling in the brakes? Further, has anyone used this spindle with a backing plate? Perhaps some one has engineered a backing plate that worked?
Speak to me my friends

Not sure on a ghia, but I never ran backing plates on any of my offroad vehicles and NEVER had an issue with front brakes (mud/sand/dirt) |

I am not running a backing plate on my ghia front discs either, but then again, I'm not running it in the rain or through muddy roads. I imagine the factory did it with good reason, but I do know from reading on here that many have skipped it, to no reported ill effect. _________________ 1958 Karmann Ghia owner |

P.O. put long axles and tubes on my 66 ghia vert, I lowered the arse and had NO tire clearance to the wheel opening. I put 66 Beetle short axles and tubes on and have lotsa tire clearance. Trouble is the backing plates are loose, even when I tourque the bee jesus outta the bearing caps, maybe the threads are bottoming out on the axle tube, put a couple a lock washers on the bolts and still the backing plates are loose. WTF. Cant drive like that!! I dunno, I'm perplexed. HELP!!! |

Check to make sure your axle tube retainer on the side of the transaxle is not warped. If it is your axle will stick out of your tube a fraction too much at the wheel bearing end and nothing will tighten up correctly. It's been a few years since this happened to a '68 of mine but I think I remember it mostly correct. Had a guy press off the casting, replace the warped retainer, then press the casting back on the tube. Took all the play out. _________________ 70 Beetle, 70 Beetle, 71 Beetle, 71 Super, 73 Super, 74 Beetle, 2000 Vintage Speedster, 2020 Jeep Renegade, 71 Squareback |
