|
|
Hi guys,
As a few may know i'm almost at the completion of my 3-year
'54 oval 3-fold ragtop restoration here in Australia with thanks to many of the kind lads on here and all around the world.
We've gone with a stock theme with mechicals, split case trans, '54 36hp engine and converted to 12v, but want to keep the 6v look.
Coil will be getting a 6v sticker and a strap over aircleaner to be fitted.
One thing i'm trying to ascertain is how I can keep the round top voltage reg, whilst utilizing a 12v reg? Is there a way to hide 12v internals under the 6v round top cap? Is there a particlar screw type reg I can use?
Currently we have 12v innards, in a 6v generator case, and basically want to keep it as OG looking as possible including the regulator.
Any help most appreciated

Why don't you simply fix the 6v regulator with a "false" wiring?
Then you have the 12v regulator under the rear seat... |

A strap-over air cleaner isn't the only authentic 54/55 air cleaner. Manns were used as well. |

It looks like the wrong regulator to me. Look how it mounts and compare that with Rick's round regulator.
I think the coil strap should be mounted with bolts, not screws? |
Damn!, Everette- good eye. It's a Porsche 356 12v generator. The regulator was a square version, so I trimed off the square cover & slid on a round regulator over the square innards.
I'll switch out the engine tin screws w/ 10mm bolts after I replace the coil bracket. |

I am trying to recreate my 36 hp for my 54 but with 12 volt. The generator is a Porsche 12 volt in a vw case, and the correct round regulator is empty, wires in one side out the other, 12 volt regulator under rear seat, works well.
Cheers,

Hmmm...I think I need a new battery and voltage regulator. And I don't have a radio in my car. This is intriguing to me. Is there a simple place I can hide a transformer so that I don't have to change out all of my light bulbs? _________________ Have nice 914, want nice Bug |

If you just need it for a low amp draw or two, get a 6 to 12 volt inverter thru the classifieds. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I swapped all the 12v guts into a 6v housing for my 40hp. I had my gen rebuilt and had tea 12v armature installed. Works great. It was a ton of work to swap the regulator stuff but it was worth it |

If it was me use the dummy correct 6volt regulator and put the 12 volt one under the seat out of sight! |
