The toggle switches seen above are in a >'73 Super Beetle. The OP has a '68. Yes indeed, later Mexi Beetles had large-surface toggle switches in the area above the radio:

The squarish switches seen on that Super are also used on first-gen Rabbits and Sciroccos. Those might be a good solution since it's a good bet that they have a similar amount of terminals like the '68's switches would. '68 had the dash-mounted wiper switch that the Super and the Rabbits had on the steering column.

German auto industry used the same wiring terminal numbers among all manufacturers. So if OP sees an older Porsche toggle switch or from a Benz, chances are the wires for a wiper switch or headlamp switch will be "similar". You'll need to study a '68 Beetle wiring diagram closely also.

Normally you could just tie the wires together with wire nuts, then attach them to the the tabs on the switch.

wire nuts are not designed to be use in places of high vibrations, such as a vehicle.... leave the wirenuts in the walls at home and use proper connectors made for vehicle wireing....

to design a system that will work, you must first spend some time familiarizing yourself with the stock switches, how they work, and what they do... then you will know what needs to be done to duplicate that with simple switches...

It's actuallly fairly easy if you are famillier with the way the stock switches work. Wipers will require 2 switches, one for each speed, the park position just needs power which is already there. The lights will also need 2 switches, one for the park lights and one for the head lights. The problem comes with the emergency flasher switch, it's a complicated switch. Replacing it with simple toggle switches will require at least 2 if not three and opperation will require switching some on and others off. It can be done but not with a simple on/off switch. I've replaced my light and wiper switches with simple push pull switches. They cost less than 5$ at Auto Zone, compared to the 30$ and 60$ for repacement VW switches. And the VW knobs screw right on.

with relays and multi-throw toggles, it's even simpler...
