I didn't have access to the larger reamer needed to cut the new bushings to size and didn't want to spend the crazy money that they sell for, so I resorted to a "shade tree" procedure I once did when replacing king pin bushings on an old Ford straight axle. There is only about .003" needed to remove from the new bushings, so I took the old swing lever pin and cut a diagonal slice in it and created a reamer out of it. I hand twisted it up through the new bushings getting them close to size. (need to use lube on this)
Then I polished the bushings to final size with a cartridge roll on my die grinder.
Voila!

Pretty crafty way to ream without a reamer. |

I laughed at that comment - "that poor SOB has suffered." Even better, one of the previous paint jobs was brush painted! _________________ Larry, Aircool Designs

looked here on The Samba and found Greg (campingbox) in Washington state. Shipped the spindles out for a king pin rebuild. |

While waiting for the spindles to come back, I'm moving on to other areas.
Figured I would tackle the emergency brake. The handle is almost frozen stiff and one cable is broke. Tried to remove the handle and couldn't get the pin to budge.
Once again, went on the search here on The Samba and found the answer.
I just want to take the time and thank all you guys that contribute to this site...what a wonderful and amazing resource for the VW community!
Anyway, the best answer I found was to cut the pin...what a PITA but with a new saw blade and some elbow grease it was out.

Decided to give the rear of the truck a good once over. Found the majority of the rear frame rails surprisingly solid, but the torsion covers have seen better days.
Only one broken bolt coming apart.
Also found a PO repair where their logic dictated that wrapping a rubber fuel line around the heater tube was a smart idea.
Also notice the black sheet metal above that fuel line...that's the bottom of the fuel tank. With the lack of a cargo floor in the rear of the treasure chest, the PO also built a wooden cradle to hold the tank and keep it from falling through.

Another issue I ran into was that the rubber brake hose bracket that is tacked to the rear axle tube was rusted off.
Since the axle isn't coming out of the truck it was very difficult to fab a new piece and weld it back in there. I did find out that certain years of Buses ran a clamp on style bracket, not sure what years but I found pictures of them in the gallery and also found one NOS bracket for sale. Since I needed two, I went looking and couldn't find any through the VW aftermarket.
I decided to look to VWs cousin, Porsche and see if they did anything similar. Turns out that the 356 Porsches used a similar axle clamp. I checked with The Sierra Madre Collection for parts and sure enough, they have them for sale. They work perfect, so if any Bus guys need these brackets check with them.
I wonder if using 356 parts will increase the top speed?
