Did a compression test yesterday after finding the parts of a piston ring in the oil pan.

#1 = 139 psi
#2 = 140 psi
#3 = 139 psi
#4 = 140 psi

From those #'s and the way it runs, the piston ring parts had to have come from a previous problem.

The old plugs and wires did not look too old, but I put new plugs and wires in it.

Old plugs:

#1 = little wet with fuel
#2 = dry and a light tan color
#3 = little wet with fuel
#4 = dry with some soot on the bottom

I'm gonna take it by a local VW shop and they are gonna let me put it on a lift to get a good look underneath.

Good you found the bare wire, but if it was shorting, you would probably find a blown fuse.

If you continue to have a problem with that light . . . probably a bad ground. Unbolt the housing from the fender, clean the mounting studs and nuts, and also the area on the fender where the housing bolts on.
Next would be loosen a couple fender bolts and snug them back up.

Most likely a previous piston failure with the repair operation replacing only the pistons and cylinders and not disassembling and cleaning the engine case.

Christmas came early Smile

New front and rear shocks, steering damper, front inner and outer wheel bearings, 4 new wheel cylinders, 4 new soft brake lines, correct heater tubes, and new tail pipes. I'm gonna be busy this Saturday and will love every minute of it!

Had Saturday set aside to install new front inner and outer wheels bearings, all 4 shocks, steering damper, all 4 wheel cylinders, all 4 soft brake lines and heater tubes.

Let's start with the right front wheel bearings. Look at the bearing cap Sad, prior to me owning the car, it looks like someone got a little upset trying to get the bearing cap off:

Took me about 20 minutes just to get the cap off and once I did, it had a blue hue to it on the lip, it obviously got extremely hot at one time.

Then to the brake drum. It would not turn freely at all. The brake adjusters were pretty well frozen. Used a little 'Deep Creep from SeaFoam' and let it set. After 15 minutes, I started again trying to adjust the shoes in to get the drum off. The adjusters started working, badly, but working. Then it was hell getting the drum off, it was acting like it was 'off-center', for lack of a better term. It would not ever get centered to freely spin. After at least another 45 minutes of pulling and pushing, cussing and cussing some more, the drum finally came off. After inspection of the drum, it appears to have had some pretty nasty hits from a BFH Sad

My first thought was the drum had a 'lip' from the brake shoes wearing on it, but no lip at all. After further inspection of the drum, I thought maybe the bearing races were not installed 'square' to the drum, nope they both were seated to the respective shoulders. Not sure if you can see in this next picture, but the only thought that I have is that the center of the drum, where the bearings ride, is 'warped, off center', from someone wailing on it with a BFH ????

Here are pictures of the left front drum, luckily no BFH damage:

I am going to get a new drum Monday, I did not want to chance putting new bearings in the old drum for the possibility of the same problem.

Has anyone ever experienced a drum to be 'off center, warped' where the bearings ride?
What are y'alls thoughts?

After the disappointment with the right front brake drum. I did get all the shocks installed as well as both front soft brake lines and the steering damper. Had to wait till monday to get a new brake drum, thanks http://vikingimportsnc.com/. Steering is MUCH tighter with the new damper! Feels like ive got some bad king pin bushings though Sad, that will be for a later day.
