I still have some more small patch pieces to make where the corner meets it the pillar but decided to just test fit and work on the corner again. Was glad I did, It was dead on this time. I went ahead and drilled it for clecos, and removed all the clamps and vice grips that went all the way around it.
There is one spot where I somehow didn't measure correctly on the side. Made a nice David Bowie lightening strike... Guess I will weld a section in there from the old piece. Guess I got in a hurry and get to pay for it for a few hours to get it right. On the bright side the corner fit tight! No light even making it through the area where the 2 pieces meet.
Guess now I just need to remove it again and prep it all for welding then finish up the small stuff.
Just getting the back of the bus together is a huge step, now I just need to save up some money so I can get the lower rear corners that I need. Oh and front floor, dog legs... _________________ Jonathan

Started installing the deck lid hanger that I got from Auto Craft. I didn't want to replace the entire thing since half of it was perfect, and the indention was not well made. So I just cut it and used one half, thats when I noticed a difference. It is slightly smaller.
Wasn't a hard fix though, just spliced it and welded it back now its dead on to the original metal.
So getting close to taking it all back apart to prep for welding.

Do you have any pics of the inside of the deck lid hanger piece? I'm needing to do this repair soon and would like to see what in there. |

Hey! Are those Cleckos (or Gleckos...I forget which they are)? I used them on my car a few times while welding. |
Yes they are, the for sure have their uses. Although self tapping screws do work better at times. They will pull the metal tighter together, I use vice grips when I'm drilling and installing cleckos to make sure the metal is held tightly together. _________________ Jonathan

Cru62 I have a few of those, they do work but clamping it tight then putting the cleco in there works well. I do use those in areas where I cant get a clamp though.
Ok now for some updates, been crazy last few years and now selling my house. So been trying to get it to where I can roll it around, so back on the rear of it.
First Test on corner not to bad really, but needed work. Some close ups
Thats a new rescue that wandered up. She just wants to be where ever I am, even if that involves hammering and noise.
To fix the issue where it wouldn't line up right, and didn't line up with the rear apron had to refabricate the mounting edge.

Really Happy with the fit now
The old splash guard was toast so I made a new one.
Worked really well was happy with it so welded it all up.
I have the rear package trey all welded up as well. Got the tail light hole marked but been measureing it way to many times. Little paranoid of the lights not being even or one being crooked lol. About to start on the other corner now but dont have to replace as much of it. Way I look at it the more og metal I can leave the better... _________________ Jonathan

Did you ever do any research on the dog tags to match them to the Tuskegee Airman? Did you return them to the family? It may be mentioned somewhere in this thread, if so, apologies. |
