Pay close attention to the rust hole in the drivers rocker, and it looks like one is stealthily hiding in the passenger side as well. Things have a peculiar drain mechanism..there are drain holes in the door, which are supposed to drain into weep holes in the upper part of the rocker, then drain out three one way plugs in the bottom of the rocker.
But, in antiquity, thse "one way" drain plugs got blocked up by paint, mud, undercoating, or just bad luck. So the water just sat in the rocker, and eventually rotted its way out.
The "might" be much more rust in those rockers than the pictures show, so be careful B4 you buy!
as GI Joe said, it "looks" solid, but there might be unseen bodywork. _________________ Tilda the Mustard Tigress 1973 Squareback (o'''^'''o)

Overall looks good, find out why the engine's tin is painted blue, which is a clue it was Frankensteined together. For example, It does have the correct air cleaner, but the fire-hazzard engine compartment fuel filter is not factory.
There's also an orange button in the dash, which is not normal. Not sure if that is evidence of a repaint. |

Are you stuck on having a '74? There is a well priced '73 fairly close to me, appears "solid" as well.

It'd be an 11hr drive for you, but it's an inland car, so potentially "less" rust(overall)..
I'd be glad to help any on this end, if I can. I have family in Macon, GA and can always use an excuse to visit! |
That is awesome of you to offer to help man, thank you...I have an offer in on this one:

My Mom's side of the family was from TN, I spent a lot of years between there and North Carolina, absolutely loved it...I have three smokers on my porch so I guess the South had its impact on me. _________________ 1974 Thing |

No worries!!
Anytime I can help!!
That green ones purdy! Extra wide fender and some super fat rear wheels too! Love the color combo! |
Stock avocado is my favorite color, I'm not a big fan of non stock colors on old VW's, but it's green, my favorite color, and it at least seems to be done well...pans are solid, stance is right for my tastes, I don't dig chrome so much, so maybe stock width rear fenders later on with BRM's, again, "if" this all works out.
Fingers crossed _________________ 1974 Thing |

That green one looks great but the 6000 one in TENN is a bargain. |

The deal went through on the green '74!
Thanks for all the advice, I'm sure I'll have lots of questions soon.

Heck yes I saw that one!
Stunning.
Btw, where can I find slightly longer rear trailing arms?
First project is to get my rear tires centered in the wheelwells _________________ 1974 Thing |
