I have a leak every once and a while come out of the top of the automatic transmission. About a half cup of pink trans fluid comes out. I have looked at every diagram I can find as well as thread and photo on the internet, I can't seem to find the port it is leaking from. I can't see it very well, it is located on the passenger side right across from the starter. I can get my fingers up in there and it feels like some sort of cap, I can spin it with my fingers, move it up and down a little. When I mess with it more fluid comes out. It leaks straight down on the side right on the axle, hit the lip of the pan and runs all over. I thought it might be because the parking in front of my house is pretty steep leaning over to the side. I have been parking on level ground, started it up drove about 30 feet and then backed into my garage. It seeped out about a quarter cup of fluid after that sitting on level ground. I had everything all clean under there and was finally able to see exactly where it was coming from. It has done this about 3 times since I have owned it ( a couple years now). Any type of thing sticking up on any diagram I can find looks like a band adjustment bolt and lock nut, this really feels like some kind of little cap. Any help would be great. |

I have some time tonight, I will try to take photos under the bus and post them. I just can't find any photo to figure out what it is I am talking about. All the photos I can find of removed transmissions are taken from the wrong side, dipstick side. I did figure out it is the top of the final drive I am talking about though. I will check my manual tonight to see if there are photos. From what I can read and find it may be a failed seal letting trans fluid into the final drive. The trans fluid is nice and clean, it does require adding some every couple weeks. I will check the final drive tonight as well to see if there is trans fluid in there. Must be some kind of vent on top of the final drive that I am feeling where the fluid is coming out? |

I did find these, thanks. I can't figure out or find a sheet with what the parts are called according to their munbers. This one:

8a and 8b
Are what I think the fluid is coming out of. Maybe everything is working just fine, a seal has failed inside between the trans and final drive cases and that is problem?
Does anyone know if I would be able to pull the trans out, fix the seal and then put it back in? Do I have to pull the trans and final drive? Do I have to pull the entire engine, trans and final drive? I am at work, I don't have my manual with me. I will also search for a thread where somebody has already fixed this issue as well. |

Yes you need to pull the entire transaxle package to get at the seals. Mixing the fluids isn't cool and can cause damage to both the final drive and the automatic section. There are several seals that separate the two halves of the transaxle so they all need to be changed. While you are at it you should also change the torque converter seal, the axle seals, and the input shaft seal. You might also consider kitting the automatic section while you are at is, which is very simple as automatics go. Replacing the inner most pinion seal in the final drive is the most technical part of resealing the transaxle. |

Last night I was able check things out. I decided to pull the fill plug on the final drive and tons of atf came out so there is an issue! I usually check the fluid and level every time I change the oil and last time I checked it was fine. I guess I will pull everything out and start a new project. I only ever drive this vehicle around town so I hope there isn't anything damaged. It runs just fine, the fluid in the trans is clean, shifts just fine and all the gears work as well. |

Thought I would report on this thread that after I serviced the trans, and transaxle, cleaned everything up, put everything back together with permatex transaxle pan sealant and transmission pan sealant I have driven for a few months now, many miles, many tanks of gas and no leaks and the oil is staying where it is supposed to. |
