Maaco's are franchisee owned so each one is different. You need to do research and see which ones are good. I've seen some amazing work come out of maaco. It all depends on how good their employees are. |

This is all true.
But keep in mind, Maaco's business model is based on volume, not quality. If you need more than the basic spray job, (you need body work, or significant prep) you pay extra. _________________ Everything known to man has been written.

Correct. I was just saying to do research. Some Maaco's actually employ very talented painters that really care about their work. Don't immediately discount it just because it says Maaco on the door. |

You want a good cheap paint job and somehow you've put trust into the equation. Here's what it boils down to. You can have one but not both, so which is it? Cheap or do you want good, trust has nothing to do with it. Here's something else to consider, a high volume paint shop based on price may not use the highest quality products. If all you are doing is flipping a car use them if its a keeper you might think about that. Good luck |

You'll be better off buying rattle can and getting some practice.
Get fast drying top coat, or one that says it can be top coated
Laquer in a can is fool proof and won't cause any troubles down the line.
1.99 is cheap. _________________

A customer of mine had a 2000 ford ranger that was painted by maco, he said "it wasnt the $500 value job", instead he payed around $2000 for it but it was done nicely. All jams were painted and all the trim was removed properly, they also filled in a dent which was done well, no waves or scratch marks. But as said above all locations will differ. I would just worry about the paint matching. _________________ 71 Super beetle |

Maybe pop into the shop a few times and ask to see an example of their completed work. You can inquire as to what products were used, etc. _________________ 1958 Karmann Ghia owner |

I worked at a maaco shop where they save money is in prep work (sanding) detail stuff so if you do all the prep work and bring it ready to spray you will get a good job the workers get 45 min to sand the whole car |

I saw a 1962 corvette in red primer being wet sanded at a Macco today. A large garage door was open when I drove by. _________________ ----------------------

Actually....just like any shop.....they do a good job on any car....if the owner is willing to pay for it.
One of our folks in the 411/412 forum is talking to Maaco right now about a high quality paint job. He noted that they are excited to do it......but its not going to have a cost guidline that fits in one of their normal packages.
He can get anything he wants......but he has to puck a baseline package that pretty much sets paint and materials level and quality. He is bringing the car in all trim and glass out ready to strip and mask
They noted that level of paint strip and prep goes along with the baseline package. If you want more.....like extra rust repair, welding etc.....those will be line items that will cos over and above the package cost.
"Most" Maaco's are no different than any other well equipped paint and body shop. Some have really skilled employees some less...depends on the labor pool locally. Most have equipment as good as anyone else.
You can get anything you want.....just not for a budget package price. If you go in expecting show quality and advanced repair for a all inclusive price......thats kind of stupid dont you think?
The funny thing is that even with most private non-chain store body shops....their daily bread and butter....probably 60-70%of all cars they paint..... is mostly people with used beaters just wanting a no frills paint job for a budget price.....not accident repair putting a 3 year old car back into factory level paint.
Dont ever be fooled that a private shop is going to work wonders to your rusted bug for the same price as Maaco....simply because they are not Maaco. Cost is cost.
If your car takes more time to get straight and clean.....you will pay for it at ANY shop you go to. If not......you will get the same thing for the same money. Ray |
