I am looking for some advice on the shape or possibly miss-shape of the hole where the door check strap enters the body. Mine are misshaped but maybe because the inner and outer holes did not match up well at the time of production.
Any pictures of others would be great, maybe they will help with one of the last jobs for my metal fabricator to correct before the body work is completed. _________________ Rod,

I've just sent you some pictures from my 47, on which you'll see that what you describe is original, even if it doesn't seem quite right. |

Thanks Martin, I've looked at the pics, they show the slots not as badly misshaped as on my car.
Anyone else out there willing to help out with this query please? _________________ Rod,

How about posting pictures here in the thread rather than privately to help people who have the same question in the future??? _________________ Chris

OK Chris now I have found my pictures I will post them.
Left door pillar, as you see the outer slot looks to have clean edges that indicate that the original hole was nearer the centre of the car than the slot in the inner metalwork. The rather crude reshaping of the hole on the outer edge looks to have been necessary to align them to insert the check strap.
This is the right pillar with the same indications as the left side.
Has anyone else seen similar problems on early cars?
I would love to see the exact shape of these holes so that my metal fabricator can re-make mine correctly.
Please don't tell me that the hinge screws are wrong, I know that should be slotted, these are just temporary during the rebuild. _________________ Rod,

Hi Rod,
Here's mine, the pics aren't great but you can see the outers on mine are also mis-shaped either through wear or as you suggest done at the factory?
mine will be staying as is, resto is on for Hessisch.
Cheers

Well from memory the originals were, they should be part number N10 915 Screw countersunk M6 x 15 DIN 63. Sorry Martin no time at present to look up DIN 63.
Martin, note the edit, they are M6 NOT M8 finger trouble!!

OK. I can see DIN 63 here: http://documents.mx/documents/din-63.html Oddly, I know where I can get this type of screw, and so will buy some, just in case!
Strange, as those on my 47 were of the 'Philips', double slot type, and would have appeared to have been original, but as we all know, anything is possible, & we keep learning all of the time. |
