Hi everyone, I just finished my first Baja build it's a 74 Baja Bug project that I kinda fell into. A friend of the family was building it and lost all interest in it. He asked me to take it over and finish it, part it out sell it or keep it, he didn't care anymore it just needed to leave his garage. When I got it it had a lot done but was a basket case of unfinished things. It has a bus trans-axle, manual rack and pinion steering, 1985 Toyota 22r, 3" body lift. I don't have many pics of the project but here are the ones I have.
This is what it looked like when I got it...
After I started working on it...
Almost finished...
and now finished... for the most part...they are never really done, Right?
Please give me your feedback as I'm new to the baja / bug world and would like to know what you all think of it.
Thanks!

It runs very much like my dad's toyota pick-up... lol very smooth, lots of pep, quiet compared to what most bugs sound like. It's at a local shop getting a final look over before I take it to the dunes and really run it, but the few time I had it out on the street it really can snap your head back with just a little press of the throttle. |

So I finally got the Baja back from the mechanic, they had to rebuild the carb because it sat with fuel in it for too long. So the completed baja is running awesome! Time to take it to the dunes and run it!
Here are a few more pic's and yes that is a "For Sale" sign in the window.. I never planned on keeping it. There are just too many other projects to get to and I need the $$$ to finish them.

Good job. I bet that radiator gets the job done! lol |
Yeah it works really well... better then expected with it being in the back. I made some side deflectors out of aluminum diamond plate to keep rocks and sand from blasting the engine and radiator but they also grab air and push it right up to the radiator as well as the fiberglass above pushing air down at it.

Thank you, it is! I've only had it on the road but still a ton of fun and it gets a lot of looks everywhere we go. Can't wait to take it off road and open it up.

Thanks! I started at $5500 on the local Craigslist, so we will see. I have it parked out front of my work and there are a lot of people stopping to look at it. Here is the listing... http://kpr.craigslist.org/cto/5514494128.html |

I have a totaled 2000 Mustang that I picked up for the motor and trany and it happens to be a convertible. The back seat is really small so I kept looking at it and said man I bet that will fit in the Baja. So that's exactly what I did, I pulled everything out of the Mustang and started mocking it up in the Baja. I had to pull the rear seat cover and trim the foam and also cut down the wire frame and weld it back together... So no it didn't fit "as is" but it would have if it was a stock bug without the roll bar. Anyway here are some photos of the test fit mock up.
It's still not finished as I have to paint all the parts and put it all back in and bolt it all down but not bad for a free seat. |
