Thanks for getting back to me. Sometimes search on here is confusing. I must be really dumb. The photo is so close I can't get a perspective on the location. It says door handle but I can't figure it out. a full picture of the door would really help. An open door measured from the skin bottom as it starts to bend inward up to the bottom of the lower moulding would give a starting point. From the photo you provided it looks like the two mouldings are 1 inch apart center to center. Is this correct.
Sorry for being persistent, but I only get one shot at this to get it right. |

No measurements but it should be quite easy to position to within a fraction of an inch simply by eye. Here's a good picture to use as a reference...
Here's one of "kiwighia68" Ghia too...
...and more...

Thanks John. I will "eyeball it" close enough is the next best thing. Surprised this has never been posted in greater detail before. |

If you can get a peak at the back of the door skin by removing the interior door panel, then you may be able to see the location of where the side trim mounting holes used to be before they were filled in and smoothed over. |

Its the passenger side door back edge just below the style line. Look at the moulding, door and photo and it should start to make sense. The door handle reference is a bit misleading - forget that part. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

John has posted a photo of my '68 Ghia earlier. I had new doorskins and lower panels and after all the welding I had to position the holes for the trim. I asked for help here on The Samba and someone took the precise measurements for me on their door, which I passed on to my panelbeater as follows:
"The lines are 109mm (lower) and 134mm (upper) respectively from the bottom edge of the door.
There are 7 sets of holes at the following intervals, starting at the front edge of the door: (You measure from the front of the door at the required height and work backwards, with the holes at the distances indicated below.)
Top line: 30mm - 185mm - 340mm - 494mm - 655mm - 805mm - 962mm
Bottom line: 35mm and thereafter the bottom holes are directly below the holes in the top row.
NOTE: The reason the first holes are 30mm and 35mm respectively is because the door edge has a slight slope there."
These are factory spec dimensions.
I can measure the distances between the holes in front of and behind the door if you need them. Let me know. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Many thanks to everyone for this great info. It is a wonderful forum and people here.
Yes... the distance between the holes would nicely finish all the needed measurements. Hopefully others can find them easily in the future. |

I think this thread would be a good addition in the How To section of The Stickies. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |
