2nd gear 10-20

Thanks

Man, if I stuck to those recommendations I'd never get up some of the hills around here...
1st 0-20
2nd 20-32
3rd 32-45
4th 45+
I sometimes drive 3rd to 50+ but only when I need to.
I have a tach and keep the rpms at below 4500. With my 27" tires on the 73 I'm ok with those speeds. _________________ No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There's always a boom tomorrow. |

I'm with you 'shark. 15mph in first is there before you know it and seems to be to low of a shift point unless you are just putting along. If I'm doing a "fast" merge onto the highway I'll wind second out to 35 and third out to 50 or 55 if it's really needed but not more than a couple seconds. Climbing hills I don't push third over 45mph to keep temps down. If I can't hold above 35mph in third on a hill I'll shift to second and keep it between 25-30mph. _________________ Jasan C.

With an auto trans it does it for you. They really are not that bad. I've never had even a slight prob. with mine, after 80,000 miles it works perfect. Cree PS, I will have to write down the shift points today and post them tonight. |

Late model Tranny 79
1st 0-20
2nd 20-40
3rd 40-55
4th 55- to infinity or the valves float.......
I might take flak for this but I really believe the Fed 79's were the best riding most powerful Bays (with all the smog control removed). _________________ 65 Bus, 72 Bus, 63 bus, 98 Golf, 92 Cabrio, 71 Fasty

I shift by ear with all of my vehicles. Be it the 2002 Cavalier or the 1970 Bus, I always listen to the engine revs and gauge the terrain, grade, etc for shifting. I never look at the speedo or tach for shift points. I guess I "become one" with the machine. Isn't that what we're supposed to do? _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Shift points are too rigid for the real world.
With all of our different ratios depending on model year, and with all the different terrains and loads, you have be flexible.
A general rule is the less load/flatter terrain shift at a lower speed than recommended, steeper hills and greater loads shift at a higher speed than recommended.
For an example, I have a 4.86 rear axle and a .082 4th. I shift into 4th at 30 mph trolling through town, I shift into 4th at 40 mph when just leaving town, I shift at 47 mph on an entrance ramp to the Interstate, and I'll shift into 4th at 55 mph if a big ol' rig is bearing down on me. Lots o'range there.

Strangely I find that I get more power when I shift a little earlier than I would in my '92 BMW. I find I almost never go over 40 in third or over 25 in second. I also have a terrible noisy vibration in my shifter in second so that encourages early upshifts to third.
So my shift pattern is mostly like this:
0-15
16-25
26-40
41up
On steep uphills I will hang in a lower gear longer, but I find that I also drop the speed at that point, so I don't exceed these speeds very much.

Hi Volks- I generally shift using my tack as a guide.
1st @ 4000/4500 rpm
2nd@ 4000/4500
3&4@2000/4000 rpm which is the driving range I use on the road
But then again, I'm mostly deaf......... TBear _________________ Don't take life too seriously- you'll never live thru it....

For t-a-c-h people, we can be more specific:
No pulling hard under 2,000 rpm.
Best torque (holding your speed) is at 3,000-3,200 rpm.
Best horsepower (gaining speed) is around 4,200, except for us true Porsche Type 4 1700-1800s, we get to wind out to 4,800 rpm, which I am not allowed to do with my engine because of my heat-damaged blued crankshaft and connecting rods.
Redline for Type 4 people is 5,400 rpm, save it for the idiot moments like passing a truck with oncoming traffic where a shift is just too time consuming. That is when you can do 37+ in 2nd, 60+ in 3rd.
Type 1 engines really prefer that you stay away from 5,000 + rpm because the magnesium case will go egg-shaped at #2 saddle and it will fret the saddle surfaces. If you have a beautifully balanced engine and counterweighted crankshaft, then you can spin up to well past 5,000 rpm.
(next on the list for high rpm operation are valve train upgrades)

it's all about listening to the engine for me..... Sketch tells me when he wants to shift. hardly ever listen to music while driving... don't want to drown out that beautiful putt putt putt
but roughly speaking
1st 0-20
2nd 20-40
3rd 40-65
4th 65 +
(kilometres an hour) |

cree; I'd like to hear your automatic shift points when you get the chance. If I have my foot right into it my auto seems to hold the lower gear for a long time. I usually wuss out and lift my foot a bit to allow the shift before the tranny does it under full throttle.
anyone else with auto shift points? |
