I think you should strongly consider a stock replacement. Most aftermarket muffler's are LOUD and the quality of them is lacking in my experiences. My bus had a header, single muffler when I bought it. I was SHOCKED how much quieter it was when I installed a stock muffler back on it. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Empi exhausts are total crap. There's plenty of OG mufflers on here that last, work better and are cheaper. (As above). I have an Empi one on a squareback that came with the car that I hate.
Be careful of using a torque wrench on that nut. All wrenches are accurate in the middle of their range, but not at either end.... 9 ft/lbs is waayyy down there on most. I've had good luck hunting at old school bicycle shops. They use inch/lbs and usually have an old inch/lb beam wrench in back they're willing to part with. |

Loooong time - no updates.
Motor is FINALLY in.
All parts have been ordered and have arrived - most installed.
Buttoning up the last bits and could use a hand identifying a piece please.
Forgive my bus ignorance ... but what is this?
I forgot the detach it with the engine drop and snapped the wires - need to replace them.
*not my motor in the pic - google grab for reference.

I just found this thread. Saw those rear headrests. Here's your bus's almost-twin.
Our Taigagrun has a chrome yellow that makes the paint wake right up in the sunlight. Some photographs taken in the direct sun come out garish. If you accidentally get touch-up or custom match and they miss the chrome part of the yellow, you end up with a duller sage green.

WoW! Talk about motivation! Love it!
Never realized the headrests were not standard on all buses.
That looks great! That makes more sense why "my" green looked so much more vibrant than the other Sage Greens I compared it too.
Can't wait to get the motor wrapped up and then onto the paint and polish to watch the green come back to life.
Thanks for sharing Colin! _________________ '70 Porsche 911T Targa (sold)

That was for engine diagnostics. Not needed. It doesn't hurt to leave it or cut it off.
Beautiful bus by the way! You should come to one of the Greater Seattle Bush Gatherings. Not a club, no dues, just guys with buses hanging out. _________________ 1978 Delux Campmobile

Finally have power, gauges all light-up, battery light lites when key is turned, but no crank...
Just Installed:
New battery
New battery wires and connections
New Bosch coil
New Bosch starter
New fuses
New voltage regulator coming tomorrow - current one untested
New Bentley manual (replacing the Chilton) comes today.
But in the interim, any thoughts of what else should I check or replace?
The shade tree mechanic I rescued the bus from didnt document the coil wiring, so I am not 100% certain I have that correct.
Thinking maybe its the ignition switch...?
Any advice welcome!

Thanks to Tcash and my Bentley finally arriving, I believe I got the wiring sorted out!
Turned out that I had a bad ignition switch and a bad condenser on the dizzy.
With my fire extinguisher nearby, I turned the key.
Very strong cranks this time and a few gurgles and two good backfires before the battery started getting weak.
Mind you it was last tabbed in 1999, so I would imagine it's going to take more than a few tries to get it to fire up after sitting for so long.
Other than some good squirts of WD40 into each cylinder to prevent scoring, what else can "encourage" it to fire up? _________________ '70 Porsche 911T Targa (sold)

If it is back firing then your timing could be off. Set it statically to 7.5 BTDC.
If you dump tablespoon of gas into the S-boot it should at least momentarily fire up. |

You were very fortunate to find a Bus like that. Thank you for the incredible amount of information that I gleaned from your journey. Thank you Samba members for contributing such an incredible amount of useful information !
Please look back and read ALL previous posts And links from people that have apparently been there and done that. Fuel/Air, compression, and fire at the right time. Pow. Happy Trails. _________________

Thanks for the tips on the visors.
Been fighting the urge to clean it up with a wax and polish.
Saving that as reward for the motor work. 😉
Added some gas to the S boot, gave the key a few turns and almost had it start up but nothing but backfires.
I agree, the timing sounds off.
Now working to decipher the enigma of the timing marks.
Not as simple as the '68 912.
Studying Ratwell's site.
Anything else that may help, please let me know. _________________ '70 Porsche 911T Targa (sold)
