I know that with a standard Diff you can get pretty close to figuring out your gear ratio (ring and pinion) by turning the rear tire and counting the revolutions of the drive shaft. I cant think of anyway to check your gearing on a trans axle without opening it up and looking? Am I right or is there a way to know without all that hassle?

I'd just pull the number off the side of the case and have a look at what it should be. You may be able to turn a tire and count the input shaft revolutions and see if that gear ratio matched up to what you counted?

I'd say if both the R/P ratio and the individual gear ratios are unknown, then turn a wheel and count the shaft revolutions as mentioned, and compare what you find with a chart of overall ratios. With that, you should come up with a real close educated guess of what is in there.

Got it... The tranny is the running car with the engine. Guess at this time it really doesn't matter, just curious. Im 99% sure it is not stock as it has been reworked so I wouldn't trust what it should be by the identification numbers. Thanks for the help guys.

Even if it was reworked, I think it is very rare to change the 1st or 2nd gears. So maybe do your experiment with 1 and 2 and compare that to the gearing chart for your guesstimate.
