So...I have a gaping hole in my dashboard where the 12 volt port used to be, and a somewhat thick cut wire, with a thinner attached wire, stashed behind the dash. I'm assuming there is a connection between the two, and am considering putting in one of the new ports containing USB connections.

Has anyone done this, and are there any pitfalls I should look out for? I assume a 4 or 5 amp inline fuse would be a good idea in this application.

In stock form, the power port wire is white/black. It originates at the 9th fuse, a red 16 Amp. That fuse also powers the glove box light and the gas heater if you have one.

A regular lighter socket can go there, though it might require some enlargement of the hole.

Maybe something like this:

would be more useful.

That's exactly what I'm planning to put in. Thanks for the info!

You might want to consider a regular 12 volt cigarette lighter and then a USB adapter. There are other devices besides phones that you might want to power that take more than the 5v that USB provides. For example, I have a GPS and a 12v electric blanket that take >5v. Maybe a mini fridge? I'm sure there are more examples. You can find USB adapters that are pretty low profile…
