Just bought the car. So I have no history. When I bought it the charging light stayed on at idle. Ran tests with volt meter. Only getting 6.4 at rpm. Should be more like 7.5 I ran all the tests I know of on the gen. and reg. Gen. on its own with reg. disconnected would only put out 17. volts. So I went the easy way and replaced both reg. and gen. with new ones. Same thing. I ran a temp ground from the gen case to the battery. nothing. I checked voltage at the battery and it is the same as whats coming out of the reg. So that tells me the wiring from batt. to reg. in fine.
Yes I did polarize the new gen. What am I missing?

Some things to check:
Idle speed- should be above 850 rpm. At what speed does your light go out!
Ground strap from the transaxle to the pan- it may be there, but is it clean? Are the connection points good?
Make sure the blue wire from the regulator is going to the gen light and the blue/green striped wire is going to the oil light.. Would be funny if the oil pressure was low and not the charging current, wouldn't it? Not really, but it is easy to swap those two wires if the prior owner was doing some work down there under the hood. _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

You're beginning to find out why the 1967 Beetle is rightly considered the high point; 12 volts.
Do a web search on 'voltage drop testing'. I learnt this about 40 years ago, best diagnostic technique ever devised. Once you understance it, anin't nothing you cain't fix. Slim Pickens signing off. |

I'll check the gound at the trans. And will lookup the voltage drop. |

The first point to check voltage should be between the +B connector directly on the regulator and engine ground.
*When cold, no loads except engine accessories, engine up to 3500rpm, voltage should slowly raise up to 7,4 - 7,5V.
Remember that dynamo regulator is not only a voltage regulator but takes into account also other two parameters: generator temperature (is mounted on the generator itself to 'sense' its temperature, and internally has some bi-metallic compensations) and current flow (windings are double, on the regulator winding there is also a current winding that decrease voltage under load).
So the first check to do is the (*), at the stated condition. |
