I am in the process of bolting on the fuel tank. Bentley manual says there should be a rubber sealing strip between the tank and body. There is no strip present and I dont remeber it being there when I took the tank off.

I can not find a rubber seal on any of the various VW parts websites.

Another issue I have is the tank is about a 1/2" off. There are hammer marks on the tank and also the firewall, so apparently the previous owner had to "massage" the tank to get it to fit, but the bolt holes are still a little off. The tank is a replacement tank and is labled on the side, for a '72 Ghia, what gives?

or you can go to the parts store and get foam gasket that comes in a roll

and is made to seal a camper shell to a truck bed. That is what I did and it

works fine.

The odd thing about this is, we've disassembled
countless Karmann Ghias from 1956 to 1974 model years
and have never even found remnants of this
fuel tank gasket. Think Question
Very strange.

My 66 had one when I took out the fuel tank, now whether it was original

or not, don't know. It was too deteriorated to re-use.

I didn't have one on my 74 Coupe. Didn't put one on when I installed the tank. Seems to me the gasket would eliminate the ground for the tank sending unit. Or impact it negativly in some way.

My 66 had one too. Maybe the gasket appeared for one year only Laughing

I used 1/2 x 3/4" closed cell weatherstripping, the self adhesive type you would use on some doors, on both my Ghia and bug. My bug had remnants of foam rubber that was OG. The mounting clips and bolts will provide the ground for the fuel gauge sender.

My 71 did not have one when I removed the tank. The new galvanized tank will have one from KGPR when I reinstall it.

I recall a paper-like gasket on my 74 when I removed it.
I was just going to apply a bead of RTV on the flange once I've prepared the body for my restored tank.

I don't think that is the best idea. if you have to pull the tank again in the future, it will essentially be glued in and really difficult to remove. Just get the foam weatherstrip mentioned from the hardware store.
