I have two engines that I am not sure what year they are. They are at least 40hp type engine.
One is numbered 3904818 and appears to be a very early 61 but not sure. The other has a bus muffler on it and again may be a very early 40hp number 5868175 or it could be a bastard 36/40. Anyone have any ideas. Just because the one has a bus muffler on it does not mean it came from a bus as who knows where it has been all these years. Let me know what you think. I have been working on VW's and driving them since 1971

3904818 = June 1960 so I'd expect it to be a 36hp?
5868175 = June 1961 so that would be a 40hp |

Neither of those numbers fall in the "bastard" series (which was 3.4-3.5 million) http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=187275& _________________ Andy T.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox. |

Thank you both. Crazy VW Lady that is the funny part. It is not a 36 but looks just like a 40. Weird. The number could have been altered or it is just when VW was changing to 40hp. |

Post a photo - it could be a new replacement engine block someone stamped an old number onto. I've seen it before:
what about the date code stamps under the flywheel... example:
