HAPPY 4th of JULY

Just hanging out around the house with the wife and I this 4th. No big plans but did do some interior body work (rear inner section) on the Bug, then simply seen where I was with the fenders....going to do some fender work, little cleaning up on the exterior body work done, order some new fender rubber, and BANG!, I'm hoping she's back on the street within a week or so. Time to take a break. Enjoy Today!

Sorry I haven't posted many updates...but she's coming along. Have the rear shock towers, bumper brackets mounted, finished. Finished the inside rear area, placed a nice "sound reductions" - "protective" covering over the work and now working on doing some repairs to the fenders and getting her back on the road....pics coming. Wanted to take this opportunity to ask:

I am currently looking for some replacement fenders. The ones I have can and are being repaired but I'd like to have some "less repair needed" fenders. So..............I've found some 70 fenders on Craigslist...Question: considering and realizing some changes to the "Bumper cuts", what years of fenders would fit my "65"....what are the major differences that will give me a problem.

Heading out to the local swap meet right after I post this, so replies will be later.

Thanks.

Be careful about horn grille hole ;compare to show cars ; hole on repop fenders is too close to hood .
reminder ; 65 fender should have SLOT for fender bracket AND hole for overrider support .
hole for directional is missing on a lot of repops ;

The slot for the bumper is on both front and rear fenders on a 1970. But they are a lot taller because of bigger brackets. On your front fenders there are no slots because the slot and hole are on the front apron. Plus the headlight buckets are way different. Turn signals were also bigger on a 70 as well. The mountings are surely different. Same for the rear fenders. Aside from tail light housing differences the bumper mounts are different. I'm not seeing a big problem with your existing fenders, why change them?

The existing fenders will be repaired with some minor work on the "exterior" (show area), the main problem is where they mount. There is some rust on the mounting portion (where the holes are) and repairs can be made, a little fabrication.....but I simply thought if i can track down some older, better mounting area condition fenders I would. Probably would have to go "West" to find a good pair of replace. Very well, appears that unless you find the exact year you may run into some concerns with fender cuts, horn cuts and turn signals.....and as a few of you stated and I heard before....the "RePops" never fit well. Thanks.

Well, the interior luggage area is complete as planned.....mig welded in some metal, filled in some seams and open cavities....then put a nice rubberized coating over the entire area....same stuff I (we) use for frames etc..

Now before you comment on some of the finishing work (you can see some of the seam and putty). I realized that this was not going to be seen and simply wanted it secured-solid.

I then went on one of Chris's (Classic VW) videos and seen where he put on some "Noise Deadening" material.....it was "Roof Fix". I went to the local Big Box, No "Roof Fix" but found some similar material that I thought would work. I think it did the job and again..."Back Yard" restoration (partial) will work well. Going to again try to finish the fenders, re-wire up the lights and hope to have her on the road within the next two week.

Hope these post help other out, either "What to Do" or "What Not To Do".

They're showing now. What kind of seam sealer are you using?

Yep, there they are....little dark...it was late when I got finished. I'd have to see if I still have the empty tube as for what type of seam sealer I used....picked it up at TPS Auto restoration shop (close to home). The body filler I used to somewhat seal and mend the mig weld areas over was the US Metal. Again, I guess I could have really finished the putty areas off to a smooth finish.....but.....you wont' see them and the sanding got a little difficult in those tight, bent knee areas.

Nah, it looks really nice. I'm replacing pans on my '58 and was looking to seal the welded seam with something, but wasn't sure what to use. I've read somewhere in here Zep230. It's flexible, waterproof, and paintable.

Cheap is good. But keeping moisture away from those welds is better. Liquid nails....I'll have to read up on that

I don't want to reference my "restoration" / "repair" as CHEAP Confused ......I'd rather reference it as: "Less Expensive" - "Less Detailed" ..........well now that I'm trying to put a better light on it, I guess we can go with "Cheap" Wink

There you go; "Budget conscious".

Here's the "Rubberized Coating" I applied once the fab work was done. Couldn't find the seamer

NEED SOME HELP! Putting the "65" back together and re-wiring the "Headlights" and front fender mount "Turn Signals". Remember now, this Bug was worked on by many others in her 50 plus years so the harness isn't going to be "colored coded" properly.....I attempted to label and mark wiring when I tore her down but many of the wires were old and broke...anyway here is where I am at. I rewired (quick connect and disconnect) the Headlights and they work fine. I got the running lights to power up but I can't figure out the fender mount turn signals. I found a wire labeled turn signals but doesn't appear any power is coming out of it. Questions:
1. Does the ignition need to be "ON" when attempting to operate the turn signals...I sort of know the answer but asking?
2. Looking at my posted pics, any suggestions on "what goes where"?

Note: All fuses checked, replaced blown ones. Checked bulbs in turn signals, they are fine.

Going in the back garage, maybe I'll figure it out when I come back in and check the replies, but any help as always is truly appreciated.

Thanks
