I know this is the wrong section but to me seems pretty similar body configuration. I have a 70 914 that needs to be rewired. In doing some research in older threads on wiring, one response was that they used a painless 12 circuit trunk mounted wiring harness.
I've thought of using a wiring harness from a ghia but seen this as another possiblility. The difference being that on the 914 the fuse panel is mounted under dash on driver's side where the ghia is in the front trunk. With the extended wiring for a painless trunk mount it would have extra wire to put in the stock location or other.
The other big difference is the pop up headlight which needs another circuit to activate the headlight motors. I think this is still doable with the 12 circuit.
Any thoughts?

Have you checked out the 911/912/914 Forum on this topic?
It would seem to be easier to buy the wire and make your own harness. It seems there are enough differences that using a Ghia harness would be a frustrating exercise.
If I were going to modify a wiring harness I would think a Beetle harness would be cheaper. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

Ease of install is exactly what I'm after. Yes I've thought of a vw wire harness which would have the advantage of using similar colors, example the standard of brown for ground.
The advantage I see with a Painless product is that in addition to the fuse panels they come prewired with relays and newer style blade fuses but the colors are non-standard vw. Which would start to get confusing tying them into the stock ignition switch which is in place. With the addition of the relays I could add the required circuit for my motors/retractable headlights.
In my older projects I had the advantage of help from an electrical whiz, now I'm winging it on my own. Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Sure I could go to 914world, and all paths will lead to Jeff B., which will always go back to using the stock wiring harness.
The thing is that all of the stock wiring harnesses are old and more than what I need. They are set up for fuel injection, where I have gone to carbs.
Just want a simple substitution, will keep looking.

The FI harness is just from the relay box to the ECU and injectors so it has nothing to do with the rest of the car. Old stock or used complete wiring harness's can be had to install in a car. _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine
