This is my 52, with original seats still. They have dirt in the fabric, I'd like to extract. It seems like they could use a shampoo/steam clean.

How would you guys approach this problem? Do's and Don'ts?

Well, I talked to some experienced people.

I'm not letting anyone near the headliner. The seats are gonna be extracted without steam and they will use very mild cleaning products and no scrubbing. Only doing the seats, door panels, and carpets.

This spot on the passengers seat is why I decided to have a thorough cleaning done. The other day I cleaned a small grease spot on the seat and was left with this discolored area.

I realized the discolored area was the only clean spot Laughing

I would discuss with a shop known for antique upholstery cleaning

I can imagine your feelings at having got some grease on such a nice original seat, but I wouldn't compound the problem by risking having everything else cleaned & risk having other fabrics/materials damaged as a result.

The reality is that you have a very old fabric there, and the risk of further damage is real. Although like most of us, you will 'home in' the stain all of the time, I would leave it alone. What did you clean it with in the 1st place?

I had them cleaned at a detail shop, they look much better now. They even gave me a tip for removing water stains that works well also.

They look much improved and I will post pictures later today when I get the car in the sun

After hot water shampoo and extraction. Lots better and less dirt, but an old water stain still remains

Sorry for not getting back Dave. Most of the cleaning was done with a shampoo and extractor. I asked the shop to dilute the normal chemicals to not be too harsh. I spoke with antique interior restorers and this was there advice, they were booked for several months so I had a "normal" detail shop do it on their advice.

The water stain is more visible now that the interior has been thoroughly cleaned. Looking back on earlier pictures I can see the water stain was always there but somewhat camouflaged by dirt.

Here's the tip I was given by the detail shop: Virgin Lacquer thinner on a cloth

I've used the lacquer thinner cautiously and it has not removed any water stains, but it has lightened them a bit. I like to follow the lacquer thinner with some lightly blown compressed air to dry it out. The wet spot created by the thinner at first looks like a new stain and I found the process to be very stressful and was more than my heart could take, but when I was done it did look a little better than when I started. I did very small areas at a time and started with a hidden area.

I am hesitant to share this advice because I didn't want to be responsible for someone's original interior, but it did work for me. Use with great caution. I also suggest using a cloth that is similar in color to the car's interior as there may be some bleed from cloth to upholstery. Perhaps laundering the cleaning cloth a couple times before use is also a good idea.

Firstly, thank you Ultramoron for the detailed information. I thought it would be something easy. How could I have thought this?
It definitely sounds stressful. I had a previous Oval that had some original interior but had a lot of rust marks. That seemed bad enough at the time to use normal detergent with lemon juice. When you first start your heart is in your mouth. I will read your article again & ponder on how I go forward. Thanks again for the information really helpful Dave
