Hey y'all, this is my first time posting so I hope I'm not doing anything wrong.

A couple weeks ago I took my bus to the shop to get some minor body work done. The tank was almost empty when I gave it to them. I picked it up today, gas gauge still reading empty, and went to fill it up at the gas station. Only a few gallons of gas pumped before the pump shut off. I tried to keep pumping, but it would shut off after a couple seconds. So I tried another gas station. Only 50 cents or so worth of gas pumped before it shut off. I tried to pump more but it kept shutting off.

I've never had this problem before. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!

Knowing the year of your rig would help as there were multiple fuel filler setup used.

You sure it was almost empty? The tank sender is bad on my 78 - shows empty about 30 miles after filling up, even though there's still a full tank of gas.

I keep track with my GPS trip meter.

pump very slow and see if it fills. These tanks are notorious for stopping and spilling with the newer nozzles. Good luck finding a nozzle meant for 1970's cars. Most are based on 1988 models and later.

I have a small screwdriver on my keychain. I loosen the screw on the collar and rotate it 180 degrees. Keeps the gas pump from shutting off every 2 seconds or splashing fuel back on my shoes. Rotate it back when you're done so you don't blow the next poor sucker's mind.

some of the nozzles here have small thin copper wires for grounding that rotating break. Then it won't pump and if the see you do it you'll be in a world of hurt.

Good to know. I've only done it on the ones that have an adjustable clamp on it. Haven't destroyed one yet, but I do try to have my back to the gas station attendant when I do it.

Didn't the EPA call for the removal of those things since most modern cars have vapor recovery built in?

you're most likely full. My 72 bus has a broken gauge and always reads empty. I just fill up every 100 or so miles. I dont typically have any issue with the nozzle turning off/having to pump slowly when filling my bus like I do in my beetle or thunderbird. Overall the bus seems to pump as easily as my modern cars.

I've read that and look forward. The problem may be that the stations, all very upset, spent $100,000 or more each to retrofit their pumps and nozzles about 5 years ago so it may be a touchy subject for the state to approach.

I think a lot depends how the tank vents.
