Hi,
you were faster than me
The shed is 300 kms away so pics will have to wait. But the photos you posted clearly show the setup. To 90 per cent Iīm sure VW used this split bug steering linkage. For the remaining 10 per cent I have no explanation.
Supposingly VW mounted the parts A, B, C and D on some early BDs, maybe as an additional shock absorber for rough road conditions abroad.
For this the steering column had to be made a bit shorter inside the column tube.
@Capriazzi: I guess the hole in your cover plate is 40 mm in diameter? Thatīs the diameter of pre 53 steering column tubes. And the steering column tube later mounted in your 24A has a diameter of 32 mm?

Yes, Bergepanzer, you are right
*** so, I need do find a correct steering column tube for my BD. Can anyone help me?

It could explain why this steering wheel on this 51 is so close to the pod. I Was asked about this last time in Bad Camberg.
Chassis number 20-018817

Makes sense. Think we are mounting the puzzle... |

Hi Capriacci,
thatīs no problem. Go and get yourself a 1mm steel tube with an outer diameter of 40 mm. On the upper end the material needs to be widened to an outer diameter of 45 mm on 20 mm height. You can either do this with an exhaust pipe widener or go the simple way and weld a 45 mm ring to the upper end.
The copper brush tube for the horn contact is located 175 mm below the upper tube end and is identical with a split bug part.
Just to fake it to original pre 53 look: You can use the existing steering box and column from your car; just cut the 32 mm tube away app. 30 mm above the cast steering box housing and fix the 40 mm tube to the 32 mm stud - you will certainly find a way.
The steering column "bearing" on the upper tube end is just a bakelite ring, pressed into the widened 45 mm area; you can also use PVC or something else.
Please keep in mind that pre 53 steering wheel hubs are shaped differently from later parts on their hub bottom.
Here some bad pics but with correct measurements.
Wish you success and good luck! Please keep us updated!

Thought it would be considerably cool to have this cover plate for my ī52 24A project, too.
As I got bored at work yesterday afternoon I decided to spend the evening and half the night on this part and built it from scratch.
Came out quite well although straightening the material especially in the ball area was a nasty business. I also imitated the small pressings which were used to align the components at the Wolfsburg factory.
Gave it a quick brush with construction vehicle HD primer afterwards; black paint will follow.
Now please donīt tell me you all want one, too ...

Bergepanzer,
you built it from scratch?!
UNBELIEVABLE !!!
I would like to have the same ability. Really impressive.
It would be interesting to see a production like this, step by step.
Congratulations!!! |

Hi,
I have the 018817 and i have problem with my steering wheel, it's very close to the pod
My steering column and tube are shorter (about 3 cm)than they are on my early 53
I Have a ZF steering box , i don't have the "bowl floor plate" Somewhere at home ????? Maybe , if I saw this plate 10 years ago i probably told me "it's not for my bus" ....
I spoke with the 016337 onwner and he have the "bowl floor plate"

if you know someone with a 1959 and older beetle = have him measure od id of his beetle tube. i think the clamp, rubber ring and tube would work in a pinch. the newer bus are smaller tube than beetle. _________________ Admin note: Bill Passed away - July, 2017
