I need to replace the ball joints on my 67 sqbk. I've never done this before and have been told that it is fairly straight forward and no special tools are needed.
In the Bentley Offical Service Manual, it explains that first the steering knuckle needs to be removed and shows a special tool needed to press the tie rod ends out of the steering arm. Is this a necessary step? Then it goes into a clamping device to compress the torsion arms?

So how do I go about this project the "fairly straight forward" way.

Not really. Remove the cotter pin in the tie rod end nut. Loosen the nut about 2 turns, but leave it on.
Now, hit the steering knuckle arm right where the tie rod attaches, as hard as you can, with the biggest hammer you have. It will pop the tie rod loose. The reason to leave the nut on, is in case you miss, you dont damage the threads of the tie rod end. I don't think I have ever used that tool they always show in the manuals. And they can damage the threads.
