Hopefully you can see what appears to be some oil pooling on the rear left engine tin... any ideas where it's coming from?

Most likely from the oil pressure sensor. I think you can see a drop on the bottom of the sensor. _________________ Jesse

I second the oil pressure sender. I've had them fail on both my VW's and BMW airheads - they start to leak internally. _________________ portland, or

Be careful not to overtighten the new sensor! The threads are supposed to be self-sealing. |

Like it was threaded with a tapered tap? _________________ Jesse

How mission critical is this part?
I know I need to replace it but is it like "don't drive the car!" _________________ '74 Zambezi green Ghia vert, autostick, 101k

It turns on an idiot oil light in your speedo if the oil pressure gets too low. Just try tightening it a little and see if it stops leaking. Tighten it too much and what you have now wont seen like a big deal. _________________ Jesse

Start the motor and see where it's coming from and how much is dripping. Constant drip, buy a new sender if it's coming from the sender but if it's coming from the threads wrap with pipe tape and reinstall. If it's 1 drip every 10 min.s and coming from the sender don't sweat it but replace the sender soon as your car is probably leaving a trail of smoke.

Personally I like gauges because if the idiot light goes out its the same as not having one...
Sometimes you'll notice the light doesn't work when you find metal chips in your oil _________________ Jesse

Sometimes tape keeps the sender from getting a good ground since the sender gets its ground from the threads but I could be wrong. _________________ Jesse

If you only use 1 wrap of Teflon tape on the lower 1/2 the upper 1/2 will make plenty of contact, besides if you remove a joint that had T-tape on the threads the tape is always cut through as the tapes purpose is to fill the thread gaps. I never had a problem with it. |

That makes sense. It probably got fame from people that use 2 1/2 feet on a 1/8" fitting
I don't know if I stopped using tape because of subconsciously thinking about the bad ground idea but I use Permatex thread sealer in a bottle that comes with a brush stuck to the lid and I've never had an issue with sensors or AN fittings leaking. _________________ Jesse

I think it has something to do with the autostick set up.
I went and gave the sensor a tightening only to find out it was rather loose. I'll keep an eye on it and see if that takes care of the leak. _________________ '74 Zambezi green Ghia vert, autostick, 101k

Yes, it is a NPT tapered thread. _________________ Current VWs:

You do not have signs of spewing, so I would say that it is not a grounding item.
Just check your oil level every 100-200 miles. _________________ Current VWs:

After tightening the sensor a bit, I still have a drip. No biggie, a new is on its way.
Thanks all. _________________ '74 Zambezi green Ghia vert, autostick, 101k
